Then last night, Friday night, I watched an OCC – Ohio division game of Gahanna Lincoln defending homecourt against Grove City winning 76-71. Here are the Players who Stood out.
Roddy is one of the smartest players I have watched this year. He does the little things excellently. He is always in the right spot on defense. He makes the right play with the ball in his hands. He never forces or keeps the ball in his hands too long, which is a very underrated attribute for good point guards. Roddy is a great playmaker. He is a pass-first guard that controls the game. He plays with a great pace and control with the ball in his hands. He is a smooth athlete with good size. He is strong and this helps him do what he wants on the floor.
Johnathan Whiteside
Johnathan Whiteside
Whiteside really impressed me Friday night against Grove City with how strong he played. He was a key part of Gahanna’s big-time win Friday night due to his play in the paint. He is a long and athlete forward who can guard multiple positions. He did a great job of switching onto guards while defending the offense. He also played really strong on the inside when posting up and getting rebounds. He was a monster on the boards. He altered a ton of shots. He consistently made winning plays and impacted the game greatly.
Abrams came out of the gates aggressively on Tuesday night and took the game over early. His length and finishing ability make him a nightmare to stop in transition. He got a ton of points at the rim off of turnovers he forced. His defense is really good and he gets his hand on the ball all the time which creates havoc for the other team. In the half-court, he showed a really smooth shot. He can knock it down from all levels. He is best when it is catch-n-shoot from beyond the arc. I was also impressed with Abrams’s ability to rebound as well.
Darek Rivera-Whitfield
Darek Rivera-Whitfield
Rivera-Whitfield is a spark plug for Gahanna Lincoln. If you want to show a kid how to come off the bench, show them Darek. This kid is great with the minutes he gets. He does the small things right and plays so hard. He hustles all over the floor and is willing to do whatever it is to help the team. Then besides all the great things he brings to the floor, he gets the crowd into the game with some dribbling moves. He can shake the defenders off balance and blow by them to finish at the rim. He has a really good touch in the lane. He also knocks down shots once he sees one go in.
Jamarcus Jones
Jamarcus Jones
Jones is one of the best defenders I have seen this season. This kid can clamp you up. He gets in your shorts and does not let you breathe. He is a very quick guard that has good lateral quickness. He is a stocky guard that allows him to dictate where the offensive player is allowed to go. He plays with incredible energy and high motor. I would love to have a player like Jamarcus Jones on my team.
This Friday was my second time seeing Boddie play this season and I am a huge fan of his game. He has a great feel for the game and is a very selfless point guard who runs the game for Gahanna very well. He keeps the ball moving and knows when to attack and not. When he does attack he is a smooth player that can get to the rim consistently. He has a very high basketball IQ and plays the game the right way. He shoots the ball really well.
