Continue ReadingWith the 2023-24 season over for nearly all high school players in the Borderland area, it now feels appropriate to rank and file the top players I have scouted. The players on this list are the best freshmen from the class of 2027 from El Paso, Las Cruces, and Alamogordo, also known as the Borderland.
10: Diego Diaz
10: Diego Diaz
Played spot minutes for an Eastlake squad with plenty of depth ahead of him at the guard position. That said, I see him getting a serious minutes increase his sophomore year. The Falcons graduated their starting point guard this past season; so naturally, Diaz will have an opportunity to fill that role. By this time next year, I think he will announce himself as one of the better starting point guards in El Paso.
9: Maximus Popescu Maximus Popescu 5'6" | PG Organ Mountain | 2027 NM
9: Maximus Popescu Maximus Popescu 5'6" | PG Organ Mountain | 2027 NM
He’s a bit undersized at 5-2 but this kid can play. More on his size, he is one of maybe four players I’ve scouted in these past four months at his height playing varsity basketball. More impressive, is the team he is doing it on. Organ Mountain is the best team in Las Cruces and a top four team in New Mexico. Additionally, they have two of the best guards in the Borderland, so Popescu getting run is a serious indication of his potential.
8: Carlos Rojas
8: Carlos Rojas
A dual sport athlete who excels on the football field and is a major plus on the court for Riverside. Played a major contributing role for 4A playoff squad. He has good size and strength and is a plus rebounder and finisher for the Rangers. Being that he is already a good football player, it’s hard to project what he ultimately looks like as a basketball prospect. That said, for however long he decides to keep playing basketball, it will be a net positive for Riverside.
7: Josef Frisbee
7: Josef Frisbee
A key starter on a decent Las Cruces High squad. Frisbee is already his team’s most reliable ball handler and a solid scorer in flashes. Once his jumper becomes a little more reliable, I believe he will blossom into one of the better point guards in Las Cruces. The Bulldawgs are a young squad, so as Frisbee is on a perfect timeline to develop along with the rest of his team.
6: Keandrey Cage
6: Keandrey Cage
One of two standout freshmen from Parkland to make this list. Cager showed out in the limited time he had at varsity this season. In 12 games, he was the co-leader in points per game. Moreover, he hit double digit scoring efforts in seven of those contests. Lastly, he shot 35.2 percent from three on 51 attempts. It’s low volume but enough to indicate that he can be a lethal shooter from the perimeter if he keeps developing.
5: Jayden Whitt
5: Jayden Whitt
Led Parkland in points, assists, and 3-point field goals as a freshman. Whitt is further along than most players his age from a shooting perspective. He shows flashes of being a good long-range shooter with his catch-and-shoot ability. The Matadors are a young team with Whitt leading the way. I think being thrusted into a role with major responsibility as a freshman will bode well for him going forward.
4: Carmyne Mychackavane Carmyne Mychackavane TX
4: Carmyne Mychackavane Carmyne Mychackavane TX
It’s always hard to predict how good a freshman prospect can be or how much upside they really have. That said, I am all in on Carmyne Mychackavane Carmyne Mychackavane TX . Injuries allowed him to find serious minutes for a good Andress squad but with that opportunity, he announced himself as one of their key role players. He has great size and good finishing skills and can hit the occasional three if given the opportunity. Again, it’s early, but I think Mychackavane will be an elite center by the end of his high school career.
3: Julien Falk-Ramirez Julien Falk-Ramirez 5'10" | PG Eastwood | 2027 TX
3: Julien Falk-Ramirez Julien Falk-Ramirez 5'10" | PG Eastwood | 2027 TX
Comparisons to his older brother–who is one of the best players in the Borderland–might seem a bit reductive and unoriginal. That said, having scouted both very closely this year, Julien has a lot of the same potential his brother is currently showing as a junior. Sibling comparison aside, Falk-Ramirez is one of a handful of freshmen to play real minutes on a playoff team. He has all the makings of a future elite prospect and I expect him to have a huge sophomore season. Assuming he is going to move into a starting role, he is already one of Eastwood’s top three returning players.
2: Tristan Edmond
2: Tristan Edmond
A key contributor on a 20-win 6A playoff squad. Edmond was a key role player for the Falcons this past season functioning as their sixth man who can play at the one or two. The freshman guard has notable length and size to go along with reliable ball handling. Considering he is already 6-1, he projects more as a wing long term, but I would not be surprised if he slots into a starting role in the backcourt next season.
1: Carlos Puente
1: Carlos Puente
One of the few freshmen in the Borderland getting minutes on an elite team. Playing varsity as a freshman is one thing, but getting playing time on one of the elite 5A teams in Texas is another. Moreover, Puente is seeing the floor on a team that is loaded at the guard/wing position. As a contributing role player, his size and length make him a plus defender with decent finishing skills. With Chapin losing five seniors this season, Puente’s role is going to expand mightily as a sophomore.
