On Tuesday, Rock Ridge hosted a good Briar Woods squad. The game was low-scoring and sloppy for both teams. Rock Ridge guard Mehki Motilewa was impressive to me. He had a rough first half but picked it up in the second. He got hot in the 3rd quarter, which helped Rock Ridge get some separation in the game. Mekhi is an excellent ball handler and a terrific athlete. He’s strong, and his ability to get to the rim was crucial in Rock Ridge’s improved offense later in the game. He had a handful of big blocks as well. Mekhi finished with 18 on the night, leading Rock Ridge to a home win over Briar.
I mentioned earlier that Ryan Brzezanski Ryan Brzezanski 6’6″ | PF Briar Woods | 2026 State VA wasn’t a factor in Tuesday’s game against Rock Ridge. Rock Ridge was physical with him and forced him into many turnovers. On Thursday, Ryan bounced back massively against a great Woodgrove team, which impressed me. Even though Briar lost by 20, Ryan had a phenomenal night. Ryan wasn’t hesitant and didn’t let himself get bullied. He was efficient and decisive and finished with 26 points on 65% shooting from the field. Ryan has a lot of skill with his shooting ability and an excellent post-game. To rebound against a good team after such a good game was something that caught my eye.
Sidwell Friends visited Flint Hill on Wednesday, and they cruised to a victory. There were a couple of standouts from Sidwell in this game, including Senior Guard Jake Williams. Sidwell got off to a hot start, and Jake played a big part in that. You know you will always get high-level shooting from Jake, but he impressed me with his energy on defense. Sidwell was suffocating on defense all night, and Jake played a part in that. He, of course, knocked down a couple of threes and finished with 12 points and 3 assists.
Highlights
Another standout from the Sidwell Flint Hill game was Sidwell Friends guard Jalen Rougier Roane. Jalen was the player of the game, and he had a super-efficient night. He was automatic from three and made some tough shots. Whenever Flint Hill strung together a nice run, Jalen would hit a big shot or do something to crush any hope of Flint Hill of getting back into the game. He was also terrific on defense, guarding bigger players. Jalen finished with 21 points on 11 shots.
Kenny DeGuzman had two fantastic performances this week. The first was a 25-point win over Hylton on Tuesday, where DeGuzman finished with 21 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists. Kenny put in an excellent all-around game and did it efficiently. The game from Kenny DeGuzman that I want to focus on is his performance against Woodbridge on Friday. Kenny finished with an efficient 31 points in another Potomac win. Kenny hit 4 threes on 5 shots and shot 59% from the field. His shot is really pretty, and even though he is such a talented player, I didn’t see him force bad shots or do anything outside himself—a great week for a great player.
