We’ve dubbed the 6-foot-5 North Eugene senior a Swiss Army Knife due to the way he can do many things on the basketball floor and there’s no question he’s appreciated the moniker.
“I love it, just being able to be a player that can go out there and just does what’s needed,” Spencer said. “I mean, sometimes I’ll have my shooting nights, sometimes I’ll have my driving nights – just being able to take what’s given to me and stuff, even like stepping up on the defensive end. I just love being able to do whatever needs to be done. I used to have dyed hair and stuff in my sophomore year – I was kind of a rebound guy, so I took the Dennis Rodman role. It’s fun to be able to do everything on the court.”
Defensively in particular is where Spencer has taken a ton of pride with his versatility. “I think that at 6-foot-5, I think I’m definitely one of the quicker guys with a little more size,” Spencer said. ” I really take it personally in my matchups. A lot of times I don’t like to have guys score more than 15 points on me, so I really take it deep down. So just being able to guard whoever’s getting buckets at the time – it’s fun to test out my matchups all over.”
College coaches have paid attention to Spencer’s versatility on the basketball floor. He notes that he’s talked to a number of NAIA and D-III schools, naming Bushnell, Linfield, Pacific, and Gordon College in Massachusetts specifically. He’s open to more schools coming into his recruitment and spelled out what he’s looking for at the next level.
“I’m definitely looking for a faster paced school – at North (Eugene) we love running the ball,” Spencer said. “And definitely just a coach that really will give me a role in there. I’m all for doing my time and stuff but I’m definitely looking to make an impact. I don’t really care what it is, whether it’s being the D guy, the rebound guy, doing the dirty work. I’m just trying to get some minutes early on to have an impact on the court, whatever it is.”
A stellar senior season will no doubt will help and the Highlanders have been off to a fast start. North Eugene is currently ranked #1 in the OSAA rankings at the start of 2024 and Spencer is ready for league play to start and what comes after that.
“I definitely think we can take it far,” Spencer said. “We’ve got a lot of team chemistry and we’ve just got to work on the little things. I think we’ll have it all chimed together and we’ll just be a well-oiled machine just going into playoffs, hopefully.”
Spencer previously ranked as the #96 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2024 prior to the latest rankings update which will be happening soon.
