And the Chargers (14-1) weathered their guests’ relentless battle throughout the high-profile matchup to never relinquish even a share of the lead, despite the Broncos (19-7) pulling back within one possession on numerous occasions — and even one point at halftime.
Dabney’s career-high 21 points were among the handful of standout performances that headlined the 54-52 victory, which extended coach Jeff Jones and company’s winning streak to 13.
“We played well for 98 percent of the game,” Jones said. “The last two minutes or so, we got real complacent — you know what I mean — and thought it was over. Like I told ’em, that’s a championship team. That’s the No. 1 team in (Class) 5A for a reason. They’re a very good ball club. Seniors out there, and they’re gonna keep playing. And they did. Coach (Jon) McClinton does a hell of a job with those guys, and they have a hell of a team.”
Quentin Dabney Quentin Dabney 6'5" | SF Madison Prep | 2024 State LA — 6-5 F — Madison Prep (2024)
The senior forward attacked the lane and the offensive boards to score six in the first quarter and seven in the second on his way to a career-high 21 points, seven rebounds and two assists.
Jayce Depron Jayce Depron 7'5" | CG Madison Prep | 2024 State LA — 6-4 G — Madison Prep (2024)
The senior shooting guard had trouble getting shots to fall early, but still eventually found his way to 12 points from the midrange pull-up to closer drives and four free throws. Depron also grabbed eight rebounds and got a piece of a blocked shot.
Xavier Ferguson Xavier Ferguson 6'2" | CG Zachary | 2025 State #322 Nation LA — 6-2 G — Zachary (2025)
The junior shooting guard was in attack mode much of the night offensively en route to a team-high 19 points, nearly half of which came from the foul line, as well as five rebounds, two blocks and two steals. His final putback helped trim the Madison Prep lead to the final two-point margin.
Kheiri Haynes Kheiri Haynes 5'9" | PG Zachary | 2024 State LA — 5-9 G — Zachary (2024)
The smallest player on the court played a big role in the Broncos’ continued rally attempts. The quick and crafty Haynes finished with 14 points, four steals, three rebounds and an assist. His offense came largely on springy mid-range pull-ups to punctuate drives, but eventually added the first 3-pointer of the game by either team midway through the third quarter. And his fourth-quarter steals helped spark Zachary’s final surges.
Chris Lindo Chris Lindo 6'6" | PF Madison Prep | 2025 State LA — 6-6 F — Madison Prep (2025)
The junior big man’s strong presence in a highly physical battle on the boards was constant from start to finish for 16 strong rebounds, many through notable contact. Zachary managed to limit Lindo’s scoring early, but at the expense of his ability to instead find his teammates for great looks such as his drives-and-dishes to Dabney and Josh Smith Josh Smith 6'3" | PG Madison Prep | 2024 State LA cutting on the baseline.
