Webster rallied after trailing 10-2 early and never looked back. They got contributions from a number of players and Iziah Purvey Iziah Purvey 6'5" | PF Webster Groves | 2024 State MO was his usual dominant self. In the end Webster Groves won 57-47.
Has Webster done enough to be considered a Class 5 favorite?
Going into the season many considered Webster to be a solid team and a program nobody should count out due to their culture and history. Since, they’ve exceeded expectations and appear to be ahead of schedule. They have solid depth and won this game due to their free throw shooting and role players. As a team they went 17-22 from the charity stripe. This is an indication of the aggressive nature they play with. It’s a team that plays with toughness and takes no possessions off. Looking to the playoffs, they’re in a difficult district and will be dangerous if they walk out winners. Iziah Purvey Iziah Purvey 6'5" | PF Webster Groves | 2024 State MO is a potential Class 5 POY and causes matchup problems for Vianney and St. Mary’s who are the other top teams in their respective district.
The trio of Scottie Adkinson Scottie Adkinson 6'3" | SG Webster Groves | 2027 State MO , Carl Whitehead, and Quincy Williams Quincy Williams 6'0" | CG Webster Groves | 2026 State MO impress.
These three had a combined point total of 33 points. Whitehead led the way with 14 points and made timely jump shots during both halves. His ability to make the three and get behind the defense on cuts adds value. Add in that he’s strong on the ball and that’s a player who rarely comes off the floor. Adkison had an off night on the offensive end but still affected defensively and made his free throw attempts. He connected on 9 total FTs. On the other end he was pressuring the ball and getting deflections. Lastly, Williams made two threes playing his typical role well. He’s their designated shooter and has rounded out his entire game. The sophomore has made strides defensively. His toughness is apparent. A player that the coach trusts.
DeAnthony McJames has a breakout game.
For Howell it was McJames who stood out from the rest. His speed and downhill burst caused a number of problems. He had a number of made shots at the basket and even hit a handful of jumpers. McJames becoming a more consistent three point threat has really opened up his offensive game. His impact on the game was obvious and he went well into double figures. A 2026 that this program will build around into the future. He’s going to be a high level varsity player for the rest of his career.
