SWFL came out on the losing end, registering only 2 wins, compared to the field who finished the day with 3 wins. All in all, there were some solid squads with a lot of talent that took the floor, and I’m going to highlight some of the prospects who really stood out to me this past weekend.
Port Charlotte’s do-it-all guard opened up the tourney with a great all-around game. Suber was the the game’s high scorer with 13 pts, but did much more than that to help his squad secure the victory. The junior prospect was aggressive getting to the hoop and was able to knock down a few clutch 3’s. Offensively he handled the ball with confidence and was able to distribute the ball around to his open teammates. On the defensive side of the ball he was active, forcing turnovers, and turning defense into offense. Keep an eye on Suber throughout this season as he progresses into a much larger role for this Pirates squad.
I’ve always known Lambert to be an elite scorer and aggressive at getting to the rim, but on Saturday he slowed it down a little and showed me another side of his game. Defensively the 6’4″ sophomore was able to guard multiple positions, and was jumping the passing lanes trying to get out in transition. As always Lambert was a huge asset on the boards for the Pirates, but what really stood out to me was his ability to become a PG and run the offense. He showed tremendous court vision this past weekend, as he took on the role of facilitator for Port Charlotte. He constantly had the ball in his hands, not trying to force anything offensively, but find his teammates for an open shot. If Lambert keeps adding to his game like this look for his stock to continue to rise, and become a high-level prospect.
Nestor is a high-energy prospect who never takes a play off. The 5’11” freshman is a true 3 and D guy in my eyes. He has the ability to score from behind-the-arc at a very high rate, but also handles the ball well and has an explosive first step which allows him to get by the defender. Defensively he will guard you for 94ft and just be in your face for the entire possession. He has a knack for forcing turnovers and isn’t afraid to get on the floor or put his body on the line and take a charge. On Saturday Port Charlotte came out slow and lethargic, but it was Nestor who came off the bench and really provided a spark. He played locked down defense, flustered Calvary’s guards and knocked down a couple big 3’s to give the Pirates the energy and momentum they needed for the victory.
Ethan Sabec
Ethan Sabec
The 6’6″ sophomore takes on a lot of responsibility for this new look Calvary Christian squad. Sabec has great length and a solid wingspan, which allows him to guard multiple positions and be a factor on the glass. Offensively he can take you to the hole, or keep you honest by knocking down the pull-up jumper. He has a great outside game with a high release and soft touch on his jump shot, where he can knock down the 3-ball consistently. Sabec led Calvary in scoring this weekend with 12 pts, and look for him to continue to be a major piece for the Warriors and their success in 2023-24.
Baker is a strong, tough kid with a great knowledge of the game. He is a true PG and leader of this Bradenton Christian squad, who has started the season off with 6-straight victories. The senior prospect finished with 23 pts in the win over Golden Gate on Saturday. He is a true 3-level scorer, who has the ability to score at the rim or from the outside with his smooth jumper. Baker is a very composed player and is willing to do whatever to help his team. He can score in bunches and won’t back down from anyone, defending at a high-level from the guard spot. Keep an eye on Baker and his Panthers squad as they look to build on their early season success.
