Some of the players that I will be listing below have serious game. They have all started this season off on a tear and by the looks of it, I don’t think they are going to slow down anytime soon.
Thanks for tuning in and enjoy!

Bryer Putman Bryer Putman 6’5″ | SF Wilton | 2027 State IA started off the season a few weeks ago with a jaw dropping stat line. One that originally was hard to believe for myself until I saw his game later on in the season. Putman, a 6’3 Freshman at Wilton High School, scored 40 Points on 16/23 shooting, grabbed 12 rebounds, and forced 2 turnovers. This stat line helped the Beavers come out on top against a quick shooting Anamosa High School team. Putman’s play-style right now is very raw and inexperienced. He makes a lot of good decisions, has great form shooting from anywhere on the offensive side, and has a ton of length. As he grows over the next year or two, both physically and mentally in the sport, he could become a top player throughout the 2027 Class in Iowa. His progress, like all young players will be the major key to his success but as for right now, he has started off his high school career on the right foot.
Nano Barrantes put up the craziest stat line that I have seen since I’ve been covering this sport over the past few years. Barrrantes scored 45 points on 22/29 shooting and he grabbed 29 rebounds in his teams 92-50 win over Stanton High School on Tuesday night. Barrantes is one of the top talents in his 2025 Class with his mixture of height and skill. He was overshadowed the past few years because of the 7’0 talent ahead of him on their roster but he is clearly making the most of his opportunities at this point. You always hear the phrase, “you can’t teach height.” That is the situation we have right here and when you add that height with some coordination/balance, it’s quite impressive. I think another important fact to note is that out of those 29 attempts he had on Tuesday, Barrantes did shoot three shots from behind the three point line. Meaning that he is working on the ability to spread the floor and play from the outside. If he gets that down over the next year or so, everyone else better watch out.
Starting off this 2023-2024 season we had a lot of stand out performances from players all across the state. The one that stood out to me the most in our first week of games was the performance put on by Jonovan Wilkinson Jonovan Wilkinson 6’2″ | SF Roland-Story | 2024 State IA of Roland-Story High School. Wilkinson is a natural shooting guard in my opinion but he also has the ability to bring up the ball or even move to the 3 spot in most situations. In his teams first game against Gilbert High School, they came away with a 95-90 win in triple overtime. Wilkinson ended the contest with 44 points on 14/26 shooting, 15 rebounds, and 3 assists. Since this event, Wilkinson has slowed down compared to scoring 44 a game but he still is averaging 27 and 10. He may not have been a player that was considered for Iowa’s High School POTY to start this season but at this point, his production can’t be ignored. He is putting up some great numbers across the board and his team is undefeated, that’s all that really matters right now.
Highlights
Whenever you hear about a double-double in this sport, you automatically think of Points and Rebounds. One that you don’t see every day is a double-double that consists of Points and Blocks or Points and Assists but in this case, we have one of those events. In this case, Treyton McCain Treyton McCain 6’1″ | PG Decorah | 2024 State IA of Decorah High School registered 18 Points and 15 Assists in his teams 109-44 win the other night. As you can tell, this team likes to play free and fast. The coaches trust in the players on the floor and because of that, they have had a good amount of success to start this winter at 4-0. As for McCain, in this specific contest he was setting his teammates up each play and being the leader that everyone knows. As it goes for point guards throughout the state that lead by example, McCain is one of the best. He has a good head on his shoulders and that was on full display in this contest. Going into winter break, the back half of this teams schedule becomes more difficult but if they keep on trusting in each other, they are going to be just fine.

Michael Martin Michael Martin 6’2″ | SG Regina | 2024 State IA and Regina Catholic didn’t started off their season on a great note but since their first game, they have figured out some things and are looking competitive going into break. One of the reasons for their success is their Senior leadership. This team has a handful of starting Seniors that understand their roles, one of them being Shooting Guard – Michael Martin Michael Martin 6’2″ | SG Regina | 2024 State IA . Martin is the definition of a shooter. When he catches and shoots in rhythm with some space, it’s usually going to be good. In his teams contest against Wilton High School a few weeks ago, Martin put up 35 points on 12/22 shooting, including going 9/11 from behind the three point line. This was one of those games where he was unconscious. One of those games that whenever he caught the ball, he should have shot it. The Regals sit at 5-2 going into their contest against New London tonight. Assuming they take care of business at home, they will be feeling good going into X-mas break.
