Teams from several different leagues across Southern California came together to play in this 4 day tournament. Some standouts from these teams came out firing, and have had impressive starts to their seasons. Some teams had some high level performances from great talent, on route to a fun, exciting 4 day shoot out.
Bryce Goldman
Bryce Goldman
Bryce Goldman was a force over this tournament. Bryce seemed to be able to constantly overpower his defenders with his strength and get to the rim at will. His aggressive drives and half court attacks were a staple in Chaminade’s offense. Goldman didn’t take many 3’s, but when the defenders were sagging off, he continued to make them pay. Bryce continues to use his strength as a weapon while finishing through contact. Big season ahead for the Chaminade Senior.
From the host team, former Canyon league MVP, Simi Valley High Schools own, Ryder Mjoen Ryder Mjoen 6’1″ | SG Simi Valley | 2024 State CA-S was a standout on the floor once again. Although it wasn’t able to happen for him this week, Ryder is rapidly closing in on 1,000 points for his high school career. This accomplishment should be coming with his next few games. Mjoen averaged 25.3 PPG over 3 games in this tournament. He was aggressive when looking for his shot and was an assassin in the midrange. While other teams were trying to send different guys at him to effect his hot shooting, Ryder was able to use his quick first step and get to his spots and use one of his strengths, shooting off the dribble going right or left. Exciting year ahead for Ryder. Big accomplishment looking ahead to his future 1,000th point.
Officially over 1,000 career points! Well deserved as the sharpshooter was on fire once again. Young’s movement off the ball on offense is always a struggle for the other team defensively. Seems like he’s watched a lot of Klay Thompson off-ball gravity, because his conditioning seemed to be a strength of his while he’s trying to get to his shot to knock down the 3. The offensive scheme of the Eagles truly lets Jackson thrive, with their strong ball movement and relentless transition. Jackson seems to be a major cog in this machine and was one of the standouts from this past tournament.
Highlights
Although most teams either faceguarded, or sent their best defensive recourses at Henderson the whole tournament, he was still able to continue to take advantage of other teams defenses. Seshsha has gotten off to a hot start from 3 this season, and that carried over into the Bob Hawking Showcase. I was extremely impressed with Hendersons composure with the ball in his hands, limiting turnovers and continually making the right decisions. Henderson is a standout on this Oak Park team, and they will be looking to him for some big nights, as they look to be a standout in the Canyon league this season.
Highlights
Jace Kellogg
Jace Kellogg
One of the young stars of this tournament was Jace Kellogg. Although he is just a sophomore, you could see the level of experience that this player has had. Offensively, he was the lead distributer in the Eagles fast pace, quick movement offense. Defensively, he was a pest in Clovis West’s full court press. He caused turnovers from the other team, while consistently putting his teammates in the right position to score. Jace is someone who was not on my radar coming into this tournament, but with his vision and craftiness offensively, I am excited to continue to watch this young player grow.
Justin Rener
Justin Rener
Rener has been on fire from 3 to start to season. Shooting around 50% from deep this season with a pretty decent sample size. The 2 man game with him and Mjoen flourishes when the 2 are driving and kicking off the dribble. There is a real chemistry between these 2 players, as they seem to know where each of them likes to catch the ball and where they can both get to their spots. Rener was hot throughout this tournament, continuing to score the ball with ease while leading his team to wins. Rener and Mjoen are a quick speedy guard duo that teams seem to not have many answers for.
