Some may be title contenders; some may be up-and-coming programs with prospects bound to breakout. I’m going Vergennes in D3, a team that went .500 last year but with an upcoming JV Team that went well above .750.
The Roster:
With no true star, Vergennes comes at you with an array of skill at each position. At the fore is 6’3 senior Oakley Francis, a wing/forward hybrid who’s best playing with power and finishing around the paint. He’s versatile defensively, utilizing nice footwork and athleticism on the perimeter and physicality on the interior to challenge shots and hit the glass. 5’10 senior G Levi Cogger will orchestrate the show, using his solid handle, slashing ability, and passing vision to facilitate the offense. He’s another tough defender who puts in a ton of effort working ballhandlers. Devin Brisson is a rangy 6’3 senior wing who runs the floor well, finishes nicely at the rim, knocks down open shots off the catch, and his length makes him tough to shoot over. At the 4 is 2025 Spencer Gebo, a classic sort of forward who sets hard screens, sees the floor well from the post, runs the open court, and does a ton of dirty work on both ends to glue everything together. This core of upperclassmen adds a number of sophomores who had a very successful JV season playing with solid pace, winning over 15 games if I remember correctly.
6’2 Ryan Wright is a 2026 wing with nice offensive creation abilities; he’s tough to contain in transition, slashes well, has a short to mid-range jumper, and makes good reads from his spots when cutters and screeners go hard. At 6’7, 2026 F Theo Elzinga brings a nice post presence, particularly defensively as he can protect the rim and clean glass. Unfortunately, I just got word that Theo has gone down with an ACL and will be out for the season. A tough blow to this bustling Vergennes team. 5’10 G/W Ryker Mosehauer is another solid sophomore perimeter player who runs the floor, defends hard, and loves the open court. Moreover, it’ll be interesting to see how much run this freshmen class gets. They come in with a number of heady players with 6’1 W Quinn LeBeau, 5’9 PG Jude Bragg, and 5’11 W Cohen Howell. If these guys gel, play together, and maximize each other’s strengths while hiding weaknesses, they’ll be a tough team who could break into the top tier in D3.
Games to Watch:
Interestingly enough, Vergennes plays a D2 heavy schedule in which they don’t see a lot of teams they’d matchup with in the playoffs. On Dec. 11th they square up with D1 Colchester in Colchester, which is always a big early season test. Then they have two games with Fair Haven, one at home on Dec. 20th and then in FHU on Jan. 16th. Those will all be tough games. Maybe the most competitive games will be against Addison County foes Middlebury and Mt. Abe. They’ll be at Midd. on Jan. 20th and that gym usually packs a punch. Then the big rivalry vs Mt. Abe is always a fun one. Both teams close the regular season with a finale in Mt. Abraham on Feb. 16th. That should be a showdown.
