Some may be title contenders; some may be up-and-coming programs with prospects bound to breakout. Up now is Division 2 and I’ve got a breath of fresh air from the VT-NH border, the Hartford Hurricanes, getting the D2 slot. Let’s go!
The Roster:
The eye of the Canes will be centered around big man Brody Tyburski. He’s a 6’5 F who plays the power game, whether he’s taking a hard drive from the short corner or high post, rim running, or backing his defender down, Brody can finish well inside. Moreover, he’s a tough interior presence defensively, challenging everything at the rim while doing well to stay in the play and clear the boards. Brody’s rim protection allows Hartford’s agile guards to be even riskier than normal defensively. 6’0 lead guard Brady Olmstead and his running mate 5’11 Christian Hathorn consistently apply tough ball pressure in the halfcourt, covering each other well when the other is beat and rotating quickly. Or it’s Brody hanging back to clean up the mess. That often trips up opponents and creates transition opportunities, which the Hurricanes are built around. 2026 guards Kole Fotion and Noah Jenks bring that same open court tenacity and should feature much more prominently in this year’s rotation. 6’4 F Ryan Murphy should be a solid rotation big with his work ethic and sound awareness offensively. This team was a 5 seed last year, a tier below the top four but battling to get recognition. I see them bolstering their reputation and breaking into the top 4 in the standings this Winter.
Games to Watch:
The games I believe will test their mettle the most are the two matchups with Fair Haven, which will be at Hartford on Jan. 13th and at FHU Feb. 6th. Plus, they have a few D1 games as well, most notably at home against Rutland Dec. 27th and at Burr and Burton Jan. 3rd. Keep watch on the Canes.
