CJ Armstrong Clutch. This is obviously a big win for Richfield and Armstrong scoring 30 (after games of 50 and 52) is such an eye opener. I think the biggest note though would be Armstrong’s play down the stretch. The feet set triples were big, the And1 mid-range jumper from about 16 feet was critical, and the foul shots down the stretch put the game away. This was a clutch performance by a budding star beating a top program.
CJ Armstrong Prospect. Armstrong is surely longer and lankier than he was when I saw him playing 16u, I would guess he is 6-foot-2 with a listed 6-foot-3. His feet set three is deadly. The release is quick and teams can’t afford any position mistake when defending Armstrong or it’s too late. His quickness out of a change of direction is something that caught the eye as well as he gets into that dribble or pull-up off the direction change fast. He’s not overly strong right now but is still able to lift the ball in on attacks while being hit. So much of that is feel and as he continues to physically mature it’s going to be even tougher. I say he is surely a top ten prospect in his class pushing his way higher.
Zavier Hayes Tough. I thought Hayes was the secret ingredient. He is such a good passer and his strength just keeps defenders at bay even after attacks allowing guys to move and then he locates. Hayes is a strong, strong wing who is always on balance which allowed him to score around the rim or deal with a defender as he looked to move the ball. Hayes scored 30 and I saw at least five assists on the video meaning he likely had a few more than that as well. A great compliment to Armstrong as Richfield pushes their way into the top ten with a great 3-0 start.
Jaden Jumpshooter. Jaden Morgan Jaden Morgan 6'4" | SG DeLaSalle | 2024 State MN had another 20 and he was once again standing in that corner catching and hitting jumpers while opponents tried to figure things out. As the Islanders grow around him, Morgan will continue to give them space with his touch mixed in with slashing baskets. He’s got a specialist tag and he is using it well.
Freshman Impact. Jaeden Udean Jaeden Udean 6'2" | SG DeLaSalle | 2027 State MN made three shots down the stretch for the Islanders that helped keep the team within striking distance of the home squad. Udean will need to grow into the way DeLaSalle competes as a unit but you can see the potential there and last night he made an important impact down the stretch.
Get them now! The Islanders are a mix of a couple transfers, some guys coming up from the JV, and some returning players. They are still figuring things out right now but when they do, De should be tough so get them now. Ray James Jr played well as the worker, the young guys Udean and Miller are starting to figure some things out, Morgan and DeVon Irvin are playing their roles, and when it comes together they will be quite tough. So get them now (as Osseo and Richfield have).
