Continue ReadingAberdeen Roncalli and Groton met up in the always anticipated rivalry game in Groton. It was the guard and perimeter play on both ends by Groton that was the difference in the game. Groton brought heavy 3/4 court man ball pressure on the Roncalli guards. Groton won the game by a score of 61-50.
Let’s talk about the top performers and prospects deserving of a mention. My main takeaway from the game is the trio of guards for Groton and how they performed and impacted the game.
The Dakota State University commit was a difference-maker as usual with 22 points in the game. He had 10 points in the 2nd quarter to really get Groton going. Lane scored from deep, got to the hoop and finished, and got in the lane to kick out to teammates. Did a nice job moving without the ball with quick, precise cuts. He showed a complete offensive arsenal and was also active defensively, guarding the ball tightly.
Really like Keegen and the impact he makes on both ends. He’s a long 5’11 and is only a Sophomore, starting for the Tigers. Quick feet and great overall movement and fluidity on the court. 15 points in the contest. He should become the next go-to guard for Groton in the future.
The Senior guard kept Roncalli within striking distance and was the main reason the game didn’t get out of hand. He hit 5 threes in the game to finish with a game-high 25 points. He didn’t get a ton of easy looks at the hoop because of the Groton defense, but when he had some room he knocked it down. He was having to try and create space for himself quite often.
Highlights
Grieben is the starting interior player for Roncalli. Good length at 6’5. More of a finesse than power guy. He finished with 10 points in the game, with some tough finishes away from the hoop off the glass. He has some good upside at his length, just needs to improve playing strength. He was a solid rebounder, high-pointing the ball in a guard-oriented game.
Zak completes the trio of impressive guards on the Groton roster. He was outstanding pressuring the ball-handler and making their life difficult. He was playing pressure defense well beyond the three-point line. Had a sequence in which he scored three straight trips down the floor later in the game. Played fast, got in transition, getting downhill at the hoop, and also was hitting jumpers. He was second in scoring for Groton with 16 points.
Ryder is an up-and-comer to watch who is a starter as a Sophomore with a lanky 6’3 frame. He’s had better offensive games and will so going forward. Prep Hoops Dakotas will be following his development, as he will be counted on heavily next season to be an offensive producer.
