Some of the top twenty players in the 2024 class hit the hardwood in Baton Rouge and made an impression on the tournament onlookers. In this PH Louisiana exclusive, we will look at top 20 players who played during the three day tournament at Madison Prep. We will even look at a top 20 player who made his return to the floor last weekend.
Kameron Williams Kameron Williams 6'7" | SF Lafayette Christian | 2024 State #60 Nation LA (6’8″ | LCA)
Williams showed why he is the top player in his class from the tip of their game with Woodlawn-BR. His initial basket was scored driving to the basket. For the rest of the game, he showed that he can score from every open spot at any level. Williams displayed his shooting range behind the arc and proved he can rebound in traffic off of misses by his teammates. He also displayed his guard skills handling in open space against various Woodlawn defenders. The Tulane commit is the best and most complete player in his class and proved it on this day.
Jeremiah Evans Jeremiah Evans 6'10" | C Southwood | 2024 State #249 Nation LA (6’10” | Southwood)
If Williams is the most complete player, Evans is right behind him. While the Cowboys went 0-2 on the weekend, Evans showed why he is a top recruit. He is very hard to stop when he gets position on the block. That part is a given. Evans proved that he could consistently make the perimeter jumper from the mid-range and behind the arc on Friday and Saturday. Couple that with his ability to find shooters and cutters passing out of double teams and we have a well-rounded big man. His game and effort impressed onlookers in the gym last weekend.
Jayce Depron Jayce Depron 6'5" | CG Madison Prep | 2024 State LA (6’3″ | Madison Prep)
While Depron was already known for his ability to get to the rim, it was his shooting that was probably most impressive during the Rumble on the River. Jayce displayed the willingness and ability to be a catch-and-shoot wing when the defense restricted his paths to the rim. He shot it well from three and even stepped out beyond NBA range. Showing that consistency opened up paths to the rim later in the game. Jayce was also a terror in the passing lanes as well. Depron definitely showed why he is a top ten player through his play over the weekend.
Jaylen Peters Jaylen Peters 6'5" | SF Liberty Magnet | 2024 State LA (6’4″ | Liberty)
Peters is one of the most athletically gifted players in the Boot. In the Friday night contest against Madison Prep, he might have made the most impressive defensive play of the weekend. Peters chased down one of the Charger post and blocked their dunk attempt at the rim. He was also a key player in the Liberty press and helped cause turnovers for his team. His ability to rebound and defend was on full display. He is an athletic freak of nature.
Christian Johnson (6’9″ | Woodlawn-Baton Rouge)
Johnson came out on the losing end against Lafayette Christian during the Rumble. While his team lost, Johnson played a game that showed off his multiple skills on the hardwood. His mid-range scoring was varied and effective. Short jumpers and jump hooks helped him score. He displayed the ability to attack the offensive boards and gain possessions for his team or finish them himself. Johnson also showed good lateral movement and an ability to defend in space. His play may not have lifted his team to victory but it displayed what he is capable of on the floor.
The top 20 of 2024 also saw a return of Josh Smith Josh Smith 6'3" | PG Madison Prep | 2024 State LA to the floor for Madison Prep. He was not playing earlier in the season and the Chargers probably suffered due to that. His athleticism and ball-handling was a definite help to MPA during the weekend. Smith was a top 15 player prior to the season and will definitely return to that status in the near future.
These players were impressive during the weekend in Baton Rouge. I look for them to continue to impress as the season continues.
