(1) Lake. Night in night out, no league is tougher than the Lake. They have the number one team in Class AAAA, two of the top five, five of the top ten, and six of the top dozen. It’s the toughest league in the state no doubt.
(2) South Suburban. There is always a South vs Northwest debate but I go with the South Suburban because I’d say you are going to have to be at your best in this league in at least 13 or 14 of the 18 games if you are a good team. Three of the top six teams in Class AAAA are in the South Suburban (as well as 5 of the top 17).
(3) Northwest Suburban. The NWSC has changed how they are scheduling this year so there are only 13 conference games (one game against all teams). They can still scheduled each other a second, but there are 13 league games as opposed to the split that led to what I think was a 19 game league schedule before. The top is the best in the state with Park Center and Totino-Grace, but the depth is not what the others have.
(4) Hiawatha Valley. We have a top two team in Class AA in Lake City, a top ten team in Class AAA in Stewartville, teams like Byron, Kasson-Mantorville, Zumbrota-Mazzepa, and Cannon Falls who are good and are in that top 20-25 area of their classes plus Goodhue, this is a deep league of nine teams.
(5) Metro West. The top half includes a top three Class AAA team (BSM), a top ten Class AAA team (Orono), and two teams from Class AAAA that are top 20 (Waconia and Chan). The bottom half slips but there is good talent in this league.
(6) Central Lakes. The top four here are really strong. Alexandria is one of the best in Class AAA with Tech being a top ten team while Brainerd and Sauk Rapids-Rice are top 20 teams in Class AAAA basketball.
(7) Wright County East. It’s only six teams but it’s a battle. Holy Family is a top three team in Class AA plus Delano is top ten in Class AAA. Southwest Christian and Mound-Westonka should be pretty good and Hutch and Jordan will give you a battle. No gimmies here.
(8) West Central. Sauk Centre is top ten in Class AA, West Central Area is top five in Class A, Morris Area is top 15 in Class AA, and BOLD is top twenty in Class AA.
(9) SEC. East Ridge is a top ten team, CDH will be top twenty, and Forest Lake should be pretty good. The depth is not there this year though.
(10) Tri-Metro.The top part of the league with DeLaSalle and Columbia Heights it two top ten teams in Class AAA plus Richfield and Cooper will be tough. The bottom half of the league isn’t very strong but the top is pretty good.
