Continue ReadingIMG Academy and Suncoast Basketball Club partnered to bring hundreds of juniors and seniors to their camps for two days of competition. While campers showed off their talents, coaches from all levels sat courtside to evaluate their talents. After talking with coaches and reviewing my notes, here are some of the top performers from Saturday’s season. Here’s a link to part 1.
Travis Knox
Knox is an under-the-radar senior forward with a next-level motor and Swiss Army knife game. He rebounds like he’s bigger than 6’3. He plays a physical game on both ends, allowing him to overpower defenders, earn trips to the foul line, and guard several positions. He’ll need some skill development as a ball handler but excels in the halfcourt as a cutter and passer from the high post. Dog is the best way to describe Knox.
Highlights
Drayton’s been on my radar since his sophomore year. The defense, athleticism, and energy he plays with are on full tilt as a senior. He’s a legitimate defensive stopper at both guard positions. Drayton puts pressure on ball handlers for 94 feet and looks to turn them over. He has a breakaway side, transition, and athleticism to finish above the rim. The 6’2 senior can run your offense in the halfcourt and create plays with his change of pace and drive and kick game.
Scott Schmitt
The 6’11 big from New Jersey has an interesting skillset. What he lacks in vertical pop, he makes up with length, short area movement, and anticipation. He does a good job of carving out space for rebounds on both ends of the floor. He ran the floor in transition for a dunk and flashed a mid-range game.
Ritchie looked like the best player at the camp at times. He’s a dead-eye shooter who can create his shot on the move and dial it in as a catch-and-shoot guy. He’s a creative ball handler who can create space at will. The 6’1 senior guard opens games up with his scoring and finishes it with his playmaking. By the second game of the camp, defenses keyed in on him and killed them with his passing.
Folds may have been the best passer in attendance on day 2. He’s a quick, smaller guard who gets in the paint while shifting the defense. Once he sees a sliver of light, he’s beaming a pass to the open man. His passes are flashy at times, but he has the wherewithal to dial it in if he throws a turnover. He plays with toughness and will take on bigger players without batting an eye.
