We are a month and 3 days away from the start of practice. What does that mean? It is time to preview the season! In this article, we are looking at Sargent County. They saw a large amount of success last season and the Bulldogs will be looking to build off of that. We have three Classes in North Dakota this year and Sargent County is in B. The Bulldogs are in District 1 Region 1. Sargent County brings back experienced players and they have good size and athleticism. Most of the teams on their schedule will struggle to match their length. The Bulldogs deserve to be a Top 10 team entering the season. See below for a Q&A session with coach Ryan Weber and the Bulldog schedule.
Q&A with coach Ryan Weber
PHD: Could you write a couple sentences summing up last season?
“Last season was a blast. We went 20-3 and ended up getting 3rd in the Region Tourney. Although the ultimate goal was to get out of Region 1, think our guys exceeded expectations last year.“
PHD: How did the offseason go for your team/program?
“We went to a lot of camps. Went to one in LaMoure, a couple up in Fargo/Moorhead, and a couple more in Minnesota. We even hosted one in Milnor. The biggest thing for me was getting some of the guys who are going to be taking on varsity minutes this upcoming season on the floor with the returners.“
PHD: Who are a few of your top players to look out for?
Josh Wittich Josh Wittich 6'5" | PF Sargent County | 2024 State ND (2024) |6’5 F| – “He is a problem for a lot of teams. He can handle the ball and shoot from outside. At 6’5”, that’s a tough matchup for any team.” 12 ppg, 7.3 RPG, 1.3 apg, 1.4 bpg
Luke Martinson Luke Martinson 6'4" | PF Sargent County | 2024 State ND (2024) |6’4 F| – “I can trust Luke to play any position on the floor. He’s another kid who can shoot outside, handle the ball, and play inside.” 13.2 ppg, 5.2 RPG, 2.5 1.8 spg
Nick Hansen Nick Hansen 5'11" | CG Sargent County | 2024 ND (2024) |5’11| – “Nick is going to see his scoring increase this year. He’s athletic as they come and I look for him to take on an overall larger role for our team.” 3.4 ppg, 3.4 RPG, 2.5 apg, 1.4 spg
Grady Wehlander Grady Wehlander 6'0" | SF Sargent County | 2024 State ND (2024) |6’0 F| – “Grady is a great shooter and will benefit greatly from our two big guys. Great ball handler and tough inside.” 3.2 ppg 2.7 rpg
PHD: Who are a couple of up-and-comers to look out for in the near future?
Jace Fyre Jace Fyre 5'10" | CG Sargent County | 2026 State ND (2026) |5’10 G| – “Jace saw spot time last year as a Sophomore. His minutes are going to go up. He needs to be more confident as a player because he’s just as good as anybody.“
Michael Hoistad (2025) |6’1 G| – “Michael also saw spot duty last year. His minutes are going to increase as well. Michael is a great shooter. He needs to work on being more consistent in how he plays the game.“
James Throener (2025) |5’9 G| – “James is an incredible defensive player. He’s as fast as they come and will be used to lock down some better players in our region.“
PHD: What style of basketball will your team play?
“We want to play fast. A lot of the guys I get to coach are great athletes. Although we lost a couple of guys from last years team, we’re not going to change our style and the kids know it.“
PHD: What are a couple of your team goals this year?
“Honestly, we want to win our District and then win the Region. The players feel we can do that and they’re dedicated to getting there.“
PHD: Who are some of the top teams in your Region?
“Our District and Region are loaded. This was a pretty tough list to compile. I’m more familiar with District 1 teams than I am with most of District 2.“
- “Sargent County“
- “Richland – I’m more familiar with Richland than I am with most other teams. They have a
a couple of pretty good players“ - “Medina-Pingree/Buchanan – We had the chance to play MPB over the summer. Tough squad.“
- “Hankinson – Again, I’m more familiar with Hankinson than most other teams.
