There were many standout players that caught the eyes of coaches, scouts, and the public crowd with their impressive on court abilities. Let’s look at some guards who raised their stock this weekend in 5 on 5 full court games.
Mason Shephard Mason Shephard 6’1″ | PG Rockwall | 2027 State TX was easily one of the top guards I noticed at the Showcase. His ability to score in isolation against his matchup and keep his teammates involved at the same time was unprecedented. He was never selfish with the basketball and was always willing to make the extra pass leading to an open transition bucket or knockdown jumper. Mason showed ability to drive to the basket and finish through contact as well as hit the open jumpshot when left space by the defender. Overall, Shephard made a very strong case to be one of the top 3 guards in the event.
Highlights
Alec Lucas Alec Lucas 5’10” | CG Hebron | 2027 TX was one of the more entertaining guards to watch during the Freshman Showcase. He could not be guarded when put in one on one situations on the offensive side, easily gliding past his matchup to the basket, all this while getting in his opponent’s head with a little trash talk. I think a great comparison for Alec would be Draymond Green, where he is proving that he can do it all on the offensive end dishing out some assists, driving to the rim, and hitting jumpers at a consistent rate. He also plays aggressive defense and is able to body up his defender while stealing the ball at a high rate as well. Anyone watching could tell Alec plays with a high passion for the game and is one of those players that you love to have on your squad, but hate if he’s on the other side of the court.
Tyler displayed a balanced game on both sides of the floor in all matchups for his team during the event. Jackson was consistently hitting shot after shot at an impressive rate, all while running an effective pick and roll and keeping his big man involved in the post as well as facilitating some sets with his other backcourt mates as well. Jackson maintains a calm poise and demeanor as he controls the pace of the game and creates opportunities for himself as well as others to excel on the floor. Overall, I would say Tyler is the guard who plays with the most control and efficiency that was at the freshman runs and his attitude pre and post game showed he was locked in and focused the entire time.
