As we approach the preseason for high school basketball, we will take a look at some different categories of players and those that excel in those roles in different areas of the state. Today, we take a look at some of the top floor generals in the Northern VA area.

Jennings has developed nicely over the past few years into one of the best true guards in the state and blew up on the recruitment trail over the summer. The 6'3” guard has great feel and instincts on both ends of the floor as he sees rotations and makes great reads, he anticipates well defensively both on and off the ball to force turnovers and he is an efficient scorer from multiple levels as well.

[player_tooltip player_id='1259547' first='Kennard' last='Wyche Jr.'] | 5'9” PG | Varina 2024

Wyche is the epitome of a winner at the high school level as he has helped Varina to back-to-back Class 4 state championships and was named Player of the Year last season. The 5'9” point guard isn't the biggest guy but he sets the tone from the get go with his ability to pressure the basketball full court and make ball handlers uncomfortable, he changes speeds well and is very crafty when he gets in the paint to draw contact and finish over bigger defenders and he has a very good IQ as a playmaker off the bounce.

[player_tooltip player_id='1494105' first='Donovan' last='Richardson'] | 6'5” CG | Steward 2025

Richardson is one of the most highly recruited guards at this point on this list, as his mix of size at the position coupled with his skillset and high IQ makes him a valuable piece that can impact the game in so many different ways. He's strong off the bounce and takes contact well while maintaining balance to make plays for others, he is an athletic and talented scorer from multiple levels and he has the leadership and unselfish qualities to get the job done for his team.

[player_tooltip player_id='1494112' first='Troy' last='Henderson'] | 5'10” PG | John Marshall 2025

The reigning Class 1 Player of the Year joins a John Marshall team that was one of the top teams in the country last year after establishing himself at Lancaster and winning a state championship last season. The 5'10” lead guard has a smooth game with the ability to both score it and distribute off the bounce, he changes speeds well and can create space off the dribble and he sets the tone on both ends of the floor with his ability to defend the ball and make plays in transition too.

Duron Moore | 5'10” PG | LC Bird 2025

Moore comes to Bird from Huguenot where he was one of the more underrated guards in his class, scoring over 600 points in two seasons and now he will be thrust into a system where the point guards have been some of the best in Richmond over the past decade or so. Moore is a talented shooter who can make shots off the bounce and off the catch, he is shifty off the bounce and able to touch the paint at will and he makes good decisions when to score and when to get others involved.

[player_tooltip player_id='1963529' first='Daion' last='Jones'] | 6'0” PG | Varina 2026

Jones may get overshadowed at times playing behind Wyche, but he's one of the best young guards in the RVA area and will be the future for the Blue Devils who have won back to back state championships. He's a lightning quick guard who changes speeds and directions well off the bounce to get in the lane and make plays, he is an excellent finisher when he gets deep but can also kick out and find open teammates and he has a competitive chip that makes him a natural leader.
