From conventions to major football games (such as Tar Heels vs. Gamecocks at Bank of America Stadium), the Queen City is where the Carolinas come together.
A few minutes northeast of Charlotte is Concord – home to Cox Mill HS – site of this year’s Prep Hoops Carolinas Freshman Showcase.
Cox Mill has become Hoop State hallowed ground by virtue of several standouts from the school having made it to the collegiate and pro ranks – including Wendell Moore and Leaky Black. We profiled a few of this year’s participants in an earlier piece. Let us spotlight a few more.
Christian Brown
Christian Brown
Brown played his final season at Irmo MS in 2022-23. When he takes to the court for 4A Irmo, he will be doing so for a team that won last season’s 4A state championship last season. Brown will be looking to admirably fill the shoes of one of the five seniors that graduated from last season’s Yellow Jackets rendition. Brown is listed at 5-foot-8. Brown will be the lone representative from Irmo that will be participating in this season’s Prep Hoops Freshman Showcase. Given what longtime Irmo coach Tim Whipple has managed to do with that program, Brown should be in good hands.
Joshua Davis
Joshua Davis
Davis is also set to take the court this coming season for another one of the Palmetto State’s premier 4A basketball programs. Davis stands at an even six feet. With the number of seniors – including one who shared team captaincy duties – that A.C. Flora graduated from last season’s team, Davis will look to find a footing on the 2023-24 rendition of the Falcons. He will be one of two from A.C. Flora that is slated to be on hand at Cox Mill HS this Saturday for this year’s Prep Hoops Freshman Showcase. This week’s event will be a display of upside and Davis is poised to have that on full display.

Alex Dauska Alex Dauska 6'2" | SG Charlotte Latin | 2027 NC
Here is a freshman who stays athletically busy throughout the school year. His resume includes stints where he has played football at the junior varsity level in addition to baseball. Dauska is another one of the taller representatives that will be on hand at this weekend’s Prep Hoops Freshman Showcase as he stands in at 6-foot-2. Dauska can maintain his accuracy from behind the 3-point arc and keeps defenses guessing with his ability to weave through defenses en route to the basket. Throughout the spring and summer months, Dauska has worn the uniform of Carolina Courts Elite. A midrange jump shot is also part of his offensive repertoire.

Gonzalez in particular will not have far to go to get to this year’s Prep Hoops Carolinas Freshman Showcase given he attends another school within the county in Northwest Cabarrus. Gonzalez is listed at 5-foot-8. His freshman season with the 3A Trojans will also be the first season of Julian Carlton’s tenure as head coach at Northwest Cabarrus as he takes over in Ricky Moore’s stead. Both he and Gonzalez will look to build on the 14-12 record that the Trojans posted in the 2022-23 regular season. Gonzalez is the only boys representative who will be at this weekend’s event representing Northwest Cabarrus.
