Q&A with Mason Peterson
PHD: How would you sum up the season for your squad?
“We had a really solid season and battled hard every game. Lots of talented kids on the squad and learned a heck of a lot this year.”
PHD: What are some of the highlights from the season?
“Opening up the year with a 3-1 tourney record and playing our best team ball right off the jump. We gelled together really well right away.“
PHD: How did you and your team overcome adversity?
“Sometimes we just needed a wake-up call during a timeout and the kids would find a way to respond to that.“
PHD: Who were a couple of your top shooters?
“ Trace Mattson Trace Mattson 5'7" | CG Horace | 2027 State ND has a pure shot that always feels like it’s going in when he gets his feet set. He started to shoot it more confidently and more often at the end of the summer. Joran Lohnes Joran Lohnes 6'2" | SF Four Winds-Minnewaukan | 2027 State ND was one of our BIGs that could really stretch the floor. A smooth lefty that can shoot it off the dribble and is knockdown off the catch. CJ Smith CJ Smith 5'9" | SG Sheyenne | 2027 State ND could also light it up from deep when he got in a rhythm. All it takes is for him to see one go down, and that would usually result in a couple more going in. He could make some tough shots off the dribble as he was really good at creating shots for himself.“
PHD: Who was your most improved player?
“ Drew Kessel Drew Kessel 6'6" | SF Fargo South | 2027 State ND really took a big leap this summer. He started to play more aggressively as a BIG down low and was able to rip and go past other bigs efficiently. He’s always got a good attitude and he started to use his size to his advantage at the end of the summer.“
PHD: Who were some of your hardest workers?
“We had a lot of hard workers but one that stood out was Seth Heidenreich Seth Heidenreich 5'8" | SG Fargo Davies | 2027 State ND . He’s a player I never had to ask to play hard. He is the definition of not taking a possession off. I could always count on him to set the tone for our team. Brogan Young Brogan Young 6'1" | SG Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier | 2027 State ND would play so hard that sometimes I’d have to tell him to slow down, he’s just always got that extra gear that helps separate him from other players. Owen Beery is another kid that plays the game at such a high level that it rarely looks like he’s not working hard. He plays both sides of the ball equally hard and was a guy that helped lead us in a lot of games because of the way he played.“
PHD: Who was your best defensive player and why?
“We had a lot of good defenders and Will Heilman Will Heilman 6'0" | CG Devils Lake | 2027 State ND was one of those guys. When he was in the game he made it tough on the guy across from him. He would pick up guys full court and make their lives miserable. Trenton Sitzer Trenton Sitzer 5'10" | SG Midway-Minto | 2027 State ND was also a guy that when he wanted to, he would make it tough on you. He played with some grit that an offensive player didn’t want to dribble the ball against.“
PHD: Which tourney was the most fun?
“The first tournament in St Cloud was the most fun because it was one of our only tournaments where we had our full squad and we played the most unselfish basketball I have ever coached. We went 3-1 and won the Consolation Championship that weekend, and I just remember how excited I was to coach them the weekend after that. It was an incredible group to be a part of and they were great kids both on and off the court.“
