Were it not for the transfer of Zach Driscoll Zach Driscoll 6'0" | SG Decorah | 2025 State IA to Decorah, MFL would have had three players among the top four returnees in steals. Nonetheless, Powell’s 114 steals are tops among returnees in the state, regardless of class. A 6-1 guard with quick feet and good hands, he does a great job jumping passing lanes and turning defense into offense.
2.) 2024 Landon Craven Landon Craven 6'1" | SG Des Moines Christian | 2024 State IA (Des Moines Christian) – 102
Craven has great hands and quick feet, and he uses those attributes to do a ton of damage on the defensive end. He has great instincts and timing, knowing when to jump a passing lane for a steal, and when to not gamble and take that chance. In addition to his work on the defensive end, he led the Lions in scoring, putting up 15.1 points a game.
3.) 2025 Parker Kuehl (MFL Mar Mac) – 76
Part of MFL players ranking so high on this top 10 is the fact that the schedule they played last year was fairly weak and filled with teams who turn the ball over quite a bit. But the other part is the fact that the Bulldogs have talented players who know how to use their quickness and athleticism to their advantage. Kuehl, a 5-11 guard, is another example of that. He stays in front of his man and is a pest as an on-ball defender.
4.) 2024 Jordan Caton Jordan Caton 5'9" | PG Alburnett | 2024 State IA (Alburnett) – 72
A cat-quick 5-9 guard with great hands and quick feet, Caton turned himself into one of the better on-ball defenders in 2A last season, helping lead the Pirates to a fantastic, somewhat unexpectedly so, season. He uses that speed to his advantage on the offensive end as well, getting into the paint and finding open teammates or getting to the bucket for finishes.
5.) 2024 Brady Martin Brady Martin 6'0" | PG West Burlington | 2024 State IA (West Burlington) – 71
The Falcons had one of their most successful seasons in school history last year, and Martin was a major reason why. A smart guard who can play with or without the ball on the offensive end, he positions himself well defensively, rotates, and jumps passing lanes to turn defense into offense. He’ll pair with Mason Watkins Mason Watkins 6'2" | PG West Burlington | 2025 State IA to give the Falcons one of the best backcourts in the class.
6.) 2025 Jacob Hurd (Cherokee) – 68
The Braves won just eight games last season, but Hurd, a 6-2 wing, was a standout performer as a sophomore. He’s a strong wing who uses his length well, getting into lanes and getting his hands on a number of passes.
7.) 2025 Gavin Swanson (Emmetsburg) – 62
If you’re looking for a potential surprise team in 2A this year, it may be the E-Hawks, who bring back a really talented 2025 group, with Swanson being one of the headliners. A 5-10 guard who sits in his stance and moves his feet, he’s a menace on the defensive end and a reliable playmaker on the offensive end.
8.) 2024 Mason Boothby (Underwood) – 60
A 6-1 guard who does a little bit of everything for the Eagles, Boothby does a good job using his quick hands and feet to stay in front of opposing ball-handlers and make them work hard. His ability to create turnovers is extremely valuable for an Underwood team that won 19 games last season and could be a threat to make it to the state tournament this year, which would be the first trip in school history.
9.) 2025 Carson Hoogeveen Carson Hoogeveen 5'10" | PG West Lyon | 2025 State IA (West Lyon) – 59
A quick 5-10 guard who puts constant pressure on opposing teams on both ends of the floor with his speed and IQ, Hoogeveen looks primed to have a huge junior year following a few key graduations for the Wildcats.
10.) 2025 Seaton Ingram Seaton Ingram 6'5" | SF Des Moines Christian | 2025 State IA (Des Moines Christian) – 59
Ingram is a fantastic athlete who uses his blend of size (6-5), length, and athleticism to create some chaos on the defensive end for the Lions, who are always one of the best defensive teams in the class. He’s a terror in transition who loves to finish above the rim.
