Louisiana has a ton of small guards that have the ability to lead teams or play on the next level. In this edition, we will look at various players who should be watched during the month of July.
Drew Timmons Drew Timmons 6'6" | SF Archbishop Hannan | 2025 State #52 Nation LA (6’5″ | 2026 | Archbishop Hannan)
If anything, Timmons reinforced the reasons why he is the top player in his class with his play at the JSE in June. He is a player who can rebound in traffic and take (and initiate) contact in the paint. Timmons can do all of that while taking wings and forwards off the dribble or shooting from the perimeter. He is a high level player who is only getting better as a sophomore. Scary proposition for those who have to defend him.
Jaylen Peters Jaylen Peters 6'5" | SF Liberty Magnet | 2024 State LA (6’4″ | 2024 | Liberty)
Peters is an athletic freak of nature. He has some serious rise and handles the ball like a point guard. Because he is playing some point guard, he does have his share of turnovers. However, he can drive to the cup like very few in the state. Peters can take the rebound and go coast-to-coast as well as find others. Peters displayed all of these traits at the JSE showcase and should be a player to watch in showcases coming statewide.
Jaylin Johnson Jaylin Johnson 6'3" | SG Alexandria | 2024 State LA (6’3″ | 2024 | Alexandria)
Johnson is one of those athletes that have the ability to do many things on the floor. From team camps to the JSE, he showed that he is a guard who can get to the cup and he can really jump. His football background helps him take all types of contact and he knows how to finish at or above the rim. Those last two traits allow him to be a good finisher in transition as well. Because his ability is endless, he is definitely a player to watch.
Tillicus Irvin (6’4″ | 2024 | East Ascension)
Ervin had a very good day at the JSE to punctuate what he had done during June. He is a player who has multiple tools in his toolbox. Ervin can rebound and finish, handle the ball in space, and score from the perimeter. He has the ability to defend three to four positions as well which also adds to his versatility. His ability to do multiple things makes him an intriguing player to watch.
Ronald Strong (6’2″ | 2025 | Calvary Baptist)
If a school is looking for a shooter, Strong is one of the best ones we have in Louisiana. He was a big key to the team camp success Calvary had this summer and his play at the JSE signified that. Strong is able to spot up from all areas behind the arc and knock down the open three. He can also guard the one and the two with little to no help. His ability to stretch the floor in today’s high school game makes him a good player to watch.
Dashawn Ceaser Dashawn Ceaser 6'3" | CG Iowa | 2024 State LA (6’1″ | 2024 | Iowa)
Ceasar is one of the better lead guards we have in Louisiana. He can penetrate and dish, bomb it from three, and rebound. Ceasar has the wherewithal to get to areas on the floor where he can do damage to a defense. He seems to be best at penetrating and scoring or penetrating and dishing. His game is one of the reasons Iowa is a challenger for a state title. Ceasar can be an asset on the next level.
