Horace, ND - The Breakdown Summer Series is headed to North Dakota! On Sunday (7/23), Horace High School and Middle Heritage Middle School will be hosting a Breakdown event. These are traditionally held in Minnesota but they are coming across the Red River for this event. There will be MN, ND, and SD teams at the event. PHD will be there to take in the games. We are doing a Watchlist article to give fans some thoughts/ideas on who to watch. The bracket that we will be watching most closely will include Horace, Oak Grove, Huron, East Grand Forks, and Perham.

Who are some of the players to keep an eye on?

Horace Hawks

The Hawks return all their guys from last years team but they have a new head coach. Kyle Cummings is the new man on the sidelines. The Hawks have talented guards & shooters but they do not have much for size. Horace has looked good this summer at team events, unfortunitly they will be missing a couple of their main players on Sunday. However, this will open up opportunities for others and the coaches can try some different lineup combinations. How will the Hawks shoot on their own court? Horace should make it rain on Sunday, especially from beyond the arc. Who will be the best shooting Hawk at the breakdown?

[player_tooltip player_id='1680906' first='Aiden' last='Green'] (2027) |5'10 G| Horace

WHY? Watch him for about 30 seconds and you will realize that he is an advanced athlete. Green's mobility and measurables make him a playmaker. Expect him to score points in transition, from his mid-range pull-up game, and slash-n-scores to the hole. I liked the looks of his crossover and he is a disruptor on defense.

[player_tooltip player_id='1189404' first='Brady' last='Westphal'] (2025) |6'0 G| Horace

WHY? Mr. Cool is a major shooting threat. Westphal can score from all levels but he can really stroke it from deep. Westphal has extended range, I have seen him drain shots from NBA range on multiple occasions. I also like his floater game. Brady is heady player with a good feel for the game. He will need to help out on the glass on Sunday without the BIG man around.

[player_tooltip player_id='1560781' first='Carter' last='Evanson'] (2026) |5'11 G| Horace

WHY? Because his nickname is Easy Money! If you want to see a pure shooter, watch Mr. Evanson. He is equally impressive off the catch, dribble, and stepback. Carter makes instinctful basketball plays and he is scholar of the game. Easy Money plays with self awareness, he knows when to take a shot and when to move the ball. I like the fact that he battle for a rebound vs. a bigger player and give his body up to take a charge.

[player_tooltip player_id='1322499' first='Moose' last='Diomande'] (2024) |6'3 F/F| Horace

WHY? The Hawks will be missing their BIG on Sunday, so Moose will have to provide interior defense and toughness. He will also have to play a big role on the boards. Moose is talented at breaking down the defense via the dribble. He has a solid pull-up game and finishes well in traffic. I am interested to see how he handles himself on defense with the absence of their biggest player.

[player_tooltip player_id='1651920' first='Owen' last='Terras'] (2027) |5'11 G/F| Horace

WHY? He will be with the JV squad at the Breakdown. I have seen this kid play a handful of time times and he always strikes me as a smart baller with natural feel for the game. Owen can play the role of a creator, distributor, and scorer. I saw him put on an offensive display at Concordia and the Horace coaches have raved about his IQ. Owen is already a very nice player, once Terras hits his growth spurt, look out! Big things are ahead for Owen and Hawks have a talented 2027 class.

[player_tooltip player_id='1651919' first='Ryder' last='Majkrzak'] (2027) |5'7 G| Horace

WHY? He will also be running with the JV team on Sunday. I have watched Majkrzak play a few times and he can really shoot it. He will not be the biggest player on the court but he can sure fill it up. Ryder is not just a shooter, he can handle the rock like a PG, create, and run the show. He looks to be a true combo guard.

Huron Tigers

The Tigers lost a good amount of seniors to graduation and they will be missing a couple players that will be at baseball. I do not know a ton about the Tigers outside of Ellwein. Huron is a AA school and the community is rich in basketball history, I imagine that the Tigers will have a solid squad.

[player_tooltip player_id='1467166' first='Blake' last='Ellwein'] (2026) |6'6 F| Huron

WHY? Ellwein will be one of the best players in the gym on Sunday. He is a top talent in South Dakota and Ellwein has also been fantastic throughout the AAU season. It will be fun to see him go against upperclassmen and see how he does against players from ND and MN. Ellwein can do it all on the court. He is long, skilled, smart, and gifted athletically.

Oak Grove Grovers

They will be a different looking team as the Grovers graduated their two top players. Trey Hatfield and Rylee Bakkegard were all Region plays last year and it will be a tall task trying to replace their experience and scoring. Hatfield was also Region 1 Senior Athlete and an All-State Player. It is never easy to lose a guy like that. On Sunday, the Grovers will be missing a couple players who recently suffered injuries. It sucks losing guys to injuries but it will give the young Grovers a chance to step up and show what they can do.

[player_tooltip player_id='2092234' first='Kai' last='Zabel'] (2027) |5'10 G| Oak Grove

WHY? He might be young but this kid is a special athlete. If you take the time to watch Oak Grove, Zabel will definitely stick out. I am interested to see his skill level and how he holds up on D against older players. I expect Kai to make plenty of plays on defense with TO's. He should shine uptempo situations. Zabel's athleticism will certainly get him some buckets.

[player_tooltip player_id='1534510' first='Luke' last='Johnson'] (2024) |6'5| Oak Grove

WHY? I have said this many times about Johnson, but he continues to get better every time I see him play. I have not watched Luke play since June, so I am interested to see if his game continues to have that upward trend. Johnson has size and strength, he also moves well. Look for him to gobble up rebounds and for him to give maximum effort. He is a better shooter from 3 than I realized, I just hope he does not fall in love with the deep ball. Johnson can be really tough around the hoop and the Grovers desperately need an inside presence. I would love to see a Johnson vs. Ellwein matchup on Sunday, that could be a fun one.

Perham Yellowjackets

The Yellowjackets will be a new look team with talented seniors moving on, Dave Cresap retiring (now coaching a M State), and Kyle Haberman as the new head coach. I still expect Perham to set a ton of ball screens, use DHO's, shoot an abundance of 3's, play disciplined, and to be tough on D.

[player_tooltip player_id='2109857' first='Ashton' last='Detloff'] (2025) |6'2 F| Perham

WHY? He is a solid left handed 4 man/forward that is good defensively. Detloff works his tall off and rebounds very hard. Look for Ashton to shoot the three ball at a good/high percentage.

Cole Rueter (2025) |6'2 G| Perham

WHY? He is a role player that could really help the team if he continues to improve his strength. Look for Rueter to be a serious shooting threat. The Jackets will have a multitude of shooters, so Cole should have plenty of chances to show off his shooting ability.

Gage Aanenson (2024) |6'1 G| Perham

WHY? He is a tough-nosed point guard that makes positive things happen. Aanenson attacks the rim aggressively, efficiently, and effectively. Gage has been working hard on his outside shot and this will be a chance to showcase it. Aanenson also gets the job done on the defensive end.

Mason Happel (2024) |5'9 G| Perham

WHY? He is a dead-eye three-point shooter that will spread and stretch the D. Happel is a player that has developed his floater off the dribble which he uses very well for being an undersized back-court playmaker. Mason is of tough on defense and he will not back down for anyone.

Best of Luck to everyone at the Breakdown!
