Continue ReadingThere were plenty of good shooters on hand at the Hardwood Classic in KC last weekend. Here are five who shot it particularly well (in alphabetical order):
Tamir Anderson Tamir Anderson 6'3" | SF Highland Park | 2024 State KS , 6-foot-3 forward, 2024, Highland Park, PE34:
There aren’t many shooters as confident and ready to fire as Anderson, a Topeka-based player running with a group from the Wichita area. He’s got a lightning-quick release and has good size to get the shot off over defenders. He was playing with an up-tempo group at the Hardwood Classic, and he knows how to run the floor to fill a lane and find openings.
Kaden Ballard Kaden Ballard 5'11" | CG Washburn Rural | 2025 State KS , 5-foot-9 guard, 2025, Washburn Rural, MOKAN:
Ballard didn’t play the role of sniper for Washburn Rural as a sophomore, but his long-range touch may be more of a weapon in the future. It seemed most of his attempts over the weekend drew nothing but net. He’s got a beautiful release and puts sweet rotation on his shot, which is what you would expect from a coach’s kid. He’s a well-rounded, smart player who won’t just bomb away, but opponents better not give him daylight.
Zeek Brown, 6-foot guard, 2025, Free State, PAC:
Reports are Brown won’t be a Kansas high school player come fall, having moved to the Missouri side of KC. That’s too bad because he is one of the most interesting scorers around. He’s got great confidence to get to the goal or to create mid-range jumpers, and he can really hit from deep too. He will be missed at Free State, and sadly will be transferred from the Kansas rankings of the 2025 class.
Cooper Chadwick, 5-foot-7 guard, 2023, Derby, Wichita Padres:
Let’s give this guy some love one more time. As a senior he was an integral guard for state-bound Derby. He is running with the Wichita Padres again this summer and looks relaxed and confident. He was teamed with some really good shooters for the weekend, but it was Chadwick who stepped up to drill a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer to end a great game.
Brady Hurla Brady Hurla 5'10" | PG St. Marys | 2025 State KS , 5-foot-10 guard, 2025, St. Marys, SSA:
There were a lot of good shooters in Hy-Vee Arena last weekend. But there were few as pure as Hurla. He has an effortless release and needs only a sliver of space to get it off. He can run the point and still find shots, which will be crucial for St. Marys this year. With a balanced group like SSA 16U, he spent a lot more time off the ball and had to be accounted for every second. He can connect from well beyond the arc, and no shot is a bad shot for this kid.
Jack Ulwelling Jack Ulwelling 5'10" | CG Derby | 2025 State KS , 5-foot-10 guard, 2025, Derby, Wichita Padres (pictured):
As mentioned above, Chadwick wasn’t alone shooting from deep for the Padres. Ulwelling is a dangerous shooter from anywhere. He doesn’t let his lack of size prevent him from making an impact in every facet of the game, including outside scoring. He is in constant motion, finding opportunities to catch and release.
