A slight change this year was the presence of a strong “local” contingent. As some Upper Peninsula players made the short trip and played well. Following are a four that caught my eye.
Gavin Grondin 5-11 2025 Kingsford (pictured) I had seen fellow Flivver (great mascot— it’s a car) Morgan Sleik Morgan Sleik 6'5" | C Kingsford | 2025 State MI before. This was my first time catching Grondin in person and Kingsford has a pretty good 2025 duo. I was given a heads up by a coach who had watched him with the Wisconsin Blizard in the spring. That coach sure was on the money. Grondin plays well both on and off the ball which you don’t often see. In the drill stations moved with purpose and intelligence. Had a trigger quick release and caught the ball in the shooting position. Good driver who showed burst and a nice spin move to get to the basket. Finished well despite not being the biggest prospect. Was able to elevate and score over bigger players. Did not appear to mind contact and finished through it. Shot wasn’t falling early. When it started to fall during the scrimmages The court really opened up for him. Played well enough that he earned an offer from the host school at the conclusion of the camp.
Jonathan Ingalls Jonathan Ingalls 6'0" | CG St. Ignace | 2024 MI 5-11 2024 St Ignace The last time I saw Ingalls in regular season game action. He was battling Wyatt Nausadis in the state quarterfinals. Follow me on this one. This might not make sense at first. After watching him I think they are similar players. While Ingalls is much smaller. Like Nausadis, I think his overall athleticism is actually underrated. Doesn’t have ideal height. However he makes up for it with extremely long arms. Allows him to get plenty of steals and do things other guards his size can’t. You don’t see many sub 6-foot point guards get tip ins. I saw Ingalls do that more than once on Tuesday. Accordingly gets off the ground quickly and is especially dynamic in transition. Isn’t going to play above the rim. But pretty darn close. The shot wasn’t falling on Tuesday. Which took away a component of his game that is usually there. When it is falling. He has “parking lot” level range.
Cameron Peterson Cameron Peterson 5'10" | PG Rudyard | 2024 State MI 5-10 2024 Rudyard As a contributor on a semifinalist team as a freshman. Peterson is a player that feels like he has been around for a long time. Unfortunately that can sometimes work against a player. Despite that, as a senior Peterson continues to show improvement and new aspects to his game. The thing you need to look past in his frame. He is built like a fullback but also has plenty of athleticism. Hung in the air for a creative layup that showed the surprising rise. Plays the type of intelligent game that you would expect from someone who has played a lot of basketball. Seemingly always makes the right play or pass.
Shawn Kingsbury 5-9 2024 St Ignace Ingalls will be one of the top guards in Northern Michigan next year. There will be an open spot next to him with the graduation of Kevin Frazier. That spot could belong this speedy spark plug type player. The overall skill level still has a ways to go. However athletically Kingsbury showed he can lock up and stay in front of some very good and athletic players. I’m not sure he is a college player at this point. However he could play an important role for the Saints. Who should be one of the top teams in Division IV statewide next year.
