Breck. This was a take notice moment for the Breck Mustangs. This is a talented, deep team with a lot of different quality pieces. They may not have a star, but their depth of really good players just overtook teams that may have a little bit more star power. Breck has a ton of really good players that are maturing which will beat star power most times and that is what happened with a 20 point win over Holy Family, a 19 point win over Lake City, and a 17 point win over LCWM. The Breck roster overwhelmed top teams that had all of their top guys!
Holy Family. The 1-2 punch of Kole Hanson Kole Hanson 6'2" | PG Holy Family | 2024 State MN (who recently committed to Duluth) and Luke Graff Luke Graff 6'3" | SG Holy Family | 2024 State MN earned the Fire wins over Caledonia and defending champion Albany which speaks volumes. The Fire lost in the title game because the support after their top guys could not handle the Breck depth. That said, it was enough to beat Caledonia and Albany and honestly that’s something that surprised me more than the struggles in the loss to Breck.
Lake City. When I first saw that Lake City lost to Breck I was surprised but then when I saw Breck I understood. The Tigers knocked off the defending champion Alnay team and they defeated Sauk Centre convincingly which surely points to this being a strong weekend.
Esko. A win over Caledonia, a convincing win over Sauk Centre, a three score loss to the defending champion, that’s a pretty solid weekend for Esko. Top ten team in Class AA next year? Of course or they would not have been invited to this event. And they proved it this weekend.
Albany. The champs lost three score games to Holy Family and Lake City, and they beat Esko. What does that mean? It could just mean…. this is summer basketball! But we like to try and dig deeper than that. Holy Family and Lake City are led by senior standouts. Albany’s top guy are entering their upperclassmen years. I’d say that the loss of their quality seniors has led to an area that will be filled by Zeke Austin and Sam Hondl Sam Hondl 6'7" | SF Albany | 2025 State MN , but that doesn’t happen overnight.
Sauk Centre. Does Sauk Centre have the depth to beat the best? A six point win over a good LCWM program says yes. Big number losses to Lake City and Esko say that they need to develop more depth to make the big run.
Caledonia. I didn’t get a chance to catch even a glimpse of what the Warriors had at the event but like Albany, this will be mostly a junior dominated team (it was a sophomore dominated team last year though). Caledonia got beat by 14 to Holy Family and by 30 to Esko before beating LCWM .
LCWM. Gave Sauk Centre a run but had a couple rough games as well.
