Now, here are the best in the area surrounding Wichita:
Top ranked senior – #6

, 5-foot-10 guard, 2024, Maize South (pictured):
Kates is a shifty ball handler and explosive attacker of defenses. He helped lead a deep and diverse Mavericks team to state last year. Now he’ll be called upon to be the lead guard in his senior season. The team has a lot of talent back for Kates to work with. Watch for his points and assist numbers to bump up significantly.
Top ranked junior – #17, Alan Hanna Alan Hanna 6'3" | SF Maize | 2025 State KS , 6-foot-3 forward, 2025, Maize:
Athletic stud. Where do you begin? He high jumped over 6-foot-9 last spring. That tells you what kind of hops he has on the court. But it also is the kind of thing football recruiters notice. Hanna is a defensive stopper, shot snuffer and soaring rebounder for the Eagles. And if you like highlight jams, this is your guy.
Most Underappreciated – Kaiden Abasolo Kaiden Abasolo 6'0" | CG Mulvane | 2024 State KS , 6-foot guard, 2024, Mulvane:
Last season started slowly for the high-scoring Abasolo. He missed a handful of games prior to the break. But as natural scorers do, he came out firing and averaged 18 points on the season. Despite his contributions, the Wildcats didn’t have a great season, so Abasolo sort of stayed under the radar. But his combination of power and ability to get shots makes him a player to know.
Top rising talent –

KS
, 6-foot-2 guard, 2026, Maize:
The future is bright for the Maize sophomore-to-be. He had a pretty special freshman year in which he averaged 13 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists. He already has the physique to dominate opposing guards and combat big men, and he’s got a variety of offensive weapons at his disposal. He gained a lot of experience in a rebuilding year at Maize. Look out next year.
Top team – Derby:
Certainly, making up for the graduation of Kaeson Fisher-Brown will be tough. He was a dynamic playmaker and leader. But Derby returns two of the best players in the area in sharpshooter

and Mason Anderson who can provide offense. If some new players can step in to add support, Derby should be right back at the 6A state tournament.
