Hoop Group Southern Jamfest took place last weekend at Boo Williams and the Virginia Beach Sportscenter, and as always it was one of the most talent filled events in the country. The field included shoe company teams from all three major circuits from all over the east coast, as well as some of the top independent teams in the country as well.

Here's a look at part one of some of the standouts from the DMV teams in attendance.

Derik Queen | 6'9” PF | Team Thrill 17U

Queen is considered one of the top prospects in the country, and he was fantastic at Southern showing his all-around skillset and showed flashes of his Jokic like game with his ability to make plays in different ways with the ball in his hands. While he isn't the most athletic player he handles the ball well and uses his size to create space or simply shoot over top of defenders, he scores it from all three levels, he's a good rebounder and smart defender and possibly his most impressive skillset is his passing ability to find shooters and cutters.

Chance Mallory | 5'8” PG | Team Thrill 17U '25

Mallory has been one of the biggest stock risers in UA this spring picking up offers from schools all over the country, and he was impressive again at Southern against top level competition. The 5'8” guard is as crafty as they come and he has tremendous feel on both ends of the floor, he shot the ball well from deep and showed his ability to get in the paint and get to the line and he was always around the ball as a defender and rebounder too.

[player_tooltip player_id='1127310' first='Rob' last='Dockery'] | 6'7” WF | Team Thrill 17U

Dockery is one of the most versatile and productive wings in the country, as he has an all-around game and guard like skills at his size that allows him to make winning plays in different ways. He handles the rock well and gets to the rim where he's a good finisher in traffic, he is an excellent playmaker who uses his size and vision to make tough passes and he can score the ball from all over the floor as well.

Brandon Jennings | 6'3” PG | Global Squad 17U

Jennings has been well known in the Richmond area as one of the top point guards for his St. Chris team, and he put the country on notice at Southern as he was fantastic for his Global Squad team throughout the event. He's a true point guard who has fantastic feel and pace which allows him to get wherever he wants on the floor, he is able to make tough shots from multiple levels and can create shots for himself and others off the bounce and he handles pressure and controls the game with ease.

Khani Rooths | 6'8” WF | New World 17U

Rooths is considered by many to be one of the top wings in the country and he has NBA upside with his size and athleticism, and before he got hurt he showed that and made it look easy when he did. The 6'8” wing showed his ability to handle the rock in transition and get to the cup where he can finish above the rim and through contact, he made shots very well from the midrange and a few from beyond the arc and he rebounded and defended multiple positions as well.

[player_tooltip player_id='1127311' first='Ty' last='Bevins'] | 6'5” CG | New World 17U

Bevins is one of my favorite players in the DMV and in my opinion one of the most under recruited, as his game should translate to the next level effortlessly and he has a lot of tools that are very intriguing. He has great size for the position and is a good athlete who has a quick first step and is shifty off the bounce, he makes shots efficiently both on the ball and off the catch and he is a good defender who makes plays on that side of the ball too.

[player_tooltip player_id='1579095' first='Tremayne' last='Hawkins'] | 6'7” PF | DC Truth 17U

Hawkins is the leader of a Truth team that has shown they are one of the top independent teams in the DMV, and he put up big numbers all weekend against some of the top teams on the east coast. The 6'7” forward is a work horse with a high motor and he attacks the glass and does the dirty work, he is an excellent finisher in traffic and has good touch around the rim and out to the three-point line as well.

Hoop Group Southern Jamfest took place last weekend at Boo Williams and the Virginia Beach Sportscenter, and as always it was one of the most talent filled events in the country.
