With College coaches in attendance from big name schools including Boston University, Long Island University, and La Salle University. These electrifying 17u athletes did not disappoint. Over the weekend, we were able to see high-level playmaking, shooting, and defense. Let’s take a look at some of the exciting Virginia athletes that I was able to get eyes on.
Cooper Stamn
Cooper Stamn
Throughout the event, Stamn showed the ability to stick with ball handlers on their drives and take contact in the chest while keeping balance and forcing a miss without fouling. On the offensive end, Stamn operated as an off-ball scorer, but was able to make some good reads in his reps as the ball handler in pick and rolls. He did a good job of drawing in the second defender in the pick and roll and hitting the screener promptly on the roll or on the pop.
Neeplo’s bright spot was on the defensive end this past weekend at Marquee Hoops Virginia Jumpoff. He did a phenomenal job of sliding his feet to contain ball handlers and not allowing any driving angles. Neeplo made athletic, explosive closeouts to shooters on shots to force misses and made disciplined closeouts to perimeter shooters, who decide to put the ball on the floor and attack.
Kaden Bailey
Kaden Bailey
Bailey was able to punish defenders on the perimeter this past weekend at Marquee Hoops Virginia Jumpoff with his soft shooting stroke and deceiving pump fake that he used frequently to get defenders jumping and out of position. On defense, he did a good job of cutting off the driving lane and getting his hands on balls for deflections out of bounds.
Daytwan Johnson
Daytwan Johnson
Johnson was adept at getting into the paint to make a play throughout the weekend. Standing at 6-foot-4, Johnson has the positional size that coaches dream of, paired with his guard skills. Johnson has a quick change of direction with the ball and the ability to stop on a dime from going full speed. These tools make it extremely difficult for opposing defenses to contain him. He was able to be used as a screener at times. Johnson set the firm screen and waited patiently to roll into open space. He locked in and stayed engaged on the defensive end throughout the weekend.
Jayden Freeman
Jayden Freeman
Jayden Freeman made his presence felt on both sides of the ball throughout the weekend at Marquee Hoops Virginia Jumpoff. On defense, Freeman operated with a high motor and good defensive awareness. He did a good job of sticking in arm-length distance of ball handlers, leaving them with limited options to score or make a play. On the offensive end, Freeman was able to show his consistent shooting stroke over the contests of defenders. Freeman shoots three-pointers with confidence off the catch, off the dribble, or off the move. He knocks down three-pointers with that same confidence in traffic as well.
