With College coaches in attendance from big name schools including Boston University, Long Island University, and La Salle University. These electrifying 17u athletes did not disappoint. Over the weekend, we were able to see high-level playmaking, shooting, and defense. Let’s take a look at some of the exciting Virginia athletes that I was able to get eyes on.
Derek Banks-West
Derek Banks-West
Banks-West was able to score the ball at a high-level in a variety of ways throughout the event. He displayed the skills to get his spot and knock down mid-range shots. Banks-West did a good job of putting defenders in jail to open up driving lanes or good looks for pull-up jumpers. He did a good job of maintaining his dribble as he maneuvered through traffic.
Darien Parker
Darien Parker
Parker moved off-ball well and got to the paint for shots at the rim. He forced his way into the paint throughout the weekend at Marquee Hoops Virginia Jumpoff. His strength on his drives helped him maintain straight lanes to the rim and absorb contact on those drives. Parker did a good job diving to the rim and cutting back door when the ball wasn’t in his hands. Parker’s body control on his finishes drew fouls at the rim, including a tough and-1. His fast food speed allowed him to beat defenders down court for easy transition buckets at the rim.
Demtruis Purnell
Demtruis Purnell
On the defensive end, Purnell’s ability to make a perfect closeout to shooters, deterring any opportunity for a shot or an attack, stood out to me. Purnell moved his feet very well and used his length to make life difficult for opposing ball handlers. Purnell shot the three-pointer with confidence on day one of Marquee Hoops Virginia Jumpoff. He was able to knock down tough threes off the catch or off the dribble regardless of what effort the defense gave to contest the shot.
Jaiden Mclendon-Parker
Jaiden Mclendon-Parker
McLendon-Parker did a good job of creating driving lanes off the dribble and absorbing contact on the attack to maintain those driving lanes. Once he got into the paint, he either made a play for himself or for others with his playmaking skills. On defense, he hounded opposing ball handlers, forcing players to pass up shots. McLendon-Parker also got out in transition and on fast breaks, beating the defense to the rim at times for easy layups.
Giles put on a phenomenal offensive performance throughout Marquee Hoops Virginia Jumpoff. After passing the ball off, Giles did a good job of relocating himself into open space. With the ball in his hands, he was able to put pressure on the rim with good burst and pace as well as knock down contested catch and shoot three-pointers. Giles was very active on the offensive glass as he pulled down a handful of offensive rebounds for potential second chance points. On defense, Giles did a good job of digging at drives and jumping passing lanes for deflections.
