Continue ReadingHigh-level prospects filled up Boo Williams Sportsplex this past weekend for Marquee Hoops Virginia Jumpoff. With College coaches in attendance from big name schools including Boston University, Long Island University, and La Salle University. These electrifying 16u athletes did not disappoint. Over the weekend, we were able to see high-level playmaking, shooting, and defense. Let’s take a look at some of the exciting Virginia athletes that I was able to get eyes on.
Swinson demonstrated great body control when handling the ball in traffic and attacking the paint. He did a good job of creating straight line drives, maintaining that driving lane, and asboring the contact to maintain balance. He was able to showcase his inbetween game by diving into open space when off-ball for soft touches around the lane as well attacking closeouts to create good looks for runners and floaters.

Adrean Newton
Newton showed insanely fast footspeed in the half court, paired with his lighting quick change of direction, it was virtually impossible for opposing defenses to keep him out of the paint. When attacking off the dribble, Newton displayed a quick first step that could freeze defenders and open up a variety of offensive opportunities. In transition or when attacking the paint, Newton was able to hit teammates in the dunkers spot for easy assists as well as kick it out to the perimeter on drives to open shooters.
Cam Shaw
Cam Shaw
Shaw was able to be active and disruptive in passing lanes in recover back to his man promptly to cause havoc for opposing offenses. When defending the post against bigger players, he was able to jump the post entry pass for a deflection, typically leading to transition opportunities. On the offensive end, Shaw attacked the paint with physicality and was able to make quick decisions to avoid charge calls when driving down the lane and hit open cutters and shooters.
Mitchell showed his strength on his drives throughout the week and as he was able to force his way into the paint to make a play, time and time again. He combined his strength and body control on one possession where he was able to lose his defender with a spin move into the paint and finished with the and-1. In the pick and roll as the primary ball handler, Mitchell was able draw in the secondary defender to deliver pin point passes to rollers for assists.
Alex Ethridge
Alex Ethridge
Ethridge made his presence felt on the perimeter with his effient and patient play style. Ethridge showed his shooting abilities throughout the weekend as he knocked down catch and shoot three-pointers as well as three-pointers coming off of screens and catching on the move. Ethridge did a good job of maintaining his dribble in traffic and moving the ball. On the defensive end, Ethridge stayed engaged and played a disciplined game. He was good at sliding his feet and disrupting shots without fouling.
