With College coaches in attendance from big name schools including Boston University, Long Island University, and La Salle University. These electrifying 16u athletes did not disappoint. Over the weekend, we were able to see high-level playmaking, shooting, and defense. Let’s take a look at some of the exciting Virginia athletes that I was able to get eyes on.
Marquise Ricks
Marquise Ricks
Ricks knocked down catch and shoot threes with confidence and also showed his skills with his in between game as we saw him knocked down tough jumpers in the mid-range. Ricks was not afraid to do the dirty work and dive on the hardwood for loose balls and give an extended effort when battling for rebounds in the paint. On defense, he did a good job of holding his ground in the paint to force misses against opposing big men.
Mekhi Wilson
Mekhi Wilson
Wilson did a good job of operating as an off-ball scorer. He was able to knock down catch and shoot three-pointers over the defenders’ contests, as well as attack closeouts to get into the lane to finish the play. He was a good ball-mover on the perimeter and demonstrated the ability to maintain his handle and his patience while being hounded by defenders. On defense, Wilson showed the ability to back peddle while defending fast breaks and timing blocks up perfectly to erase shots without fouling, as well as switch seamlessly when defending on the perimeter.
Gavin Kay
Gavin Kay
Kay played a dominant game in the paint as he was able to get his buckets with his back to the basket using a baby hooks shot with a soft touch, and bully smaller defenders for easy shots around the rim. From the post, Kay had no problem creating for himself, but he did a good job of getting teammates involved from the paint as we saw him deliver pocket passes to divers and kick outs to open shooting on the perimeter from the post.
Miller handled the ball really comfortable in the big man role for Team Loaded 757 over the weekend. He was able to grab rebounds and run, taking the ball coast to coast for transition assists or to finish the play himself. He was extremely active on the glass on both sides of the court. Miller operated with a high motor in the paint, resulting in offensive rebounds and second chance points in traffic.
Jaylen Hister
Jaylen Hister
Hister hawked down offensive rebounds all throughout the week, extending offensive possessions and generating second chance points. He also did a good job of moving the ball and picking up easy assists in a variety of ways, including a skip pass to the opposing wing for an assist on a three-pointer. When off-ball, he did a good job of positioning himself around the rim on drives from teammates to receive dump off passes and shots at the rim.
