With College coaches in attendance from big name schools including Florida State University, Rutgers, and Navy, these electrifying 17u athletes did not disappoint. Over the weekend, we were able to watch high-level playmaking, shooting, and defense. Let’s look at a few of the impressive Virginia athletes I was able to observe.
Kameren Carmichael
Kameren Carmichael
Throughout this past weekend at Marquee Hoops DC Jumpoff, Carmichael was able to show off his ability to get downhill and get two feet in the paint when the ball was in his hands. Carmichael maintained good body control as he got lower than defenders on drives to turn the corner and create opportunities at the rim. He did a good job of rebounding his position as we saw him chase down long offensive boards to keep possessions alive.
Daron Baugh
Daron Baugh
Baugh did a good job of beating his defenders off the dribble and attacking closeouts throughout the weekend. On multiple occasion we saw Baugh get deep into the paint and deliver off-balance passes on the dot to open teammates. Baugh operated as a good and quick decision maker, as he rarely missed open reads and was swift on the majority of his assists.
Deandre Brown Jr
Deandre Brown Jr
Brown Jr was able to showcase his ability to play as an off-ball scorer as we saw him attack defenders off the catch for finishes at the rim in a crowded paint while also showcasing the ability to create his own shots at the lead guard as he was able to create and make pull-up jumpers with confidence throughout the weekend. Brown Jr. was very active on the glass as well. He generated a good amount of second chance points from fighting and hustling for offensive rebounds.
Jalen Merchant
Jalen Merchant
Merchant was able to put his speed and pace with the ball on display in transition situations as defenders struggled to stay in front of him in the open court throughout Marquee Hoops DC Jumpoff. Merchant showed the ability to knock down the catch and shoot three-pointer with a consistent form with his knees and feet squared to the rim on the shot. Merchant knocked down spot-up catch and shoot three-pointers with good balance and a quick release.
Keasey consistently made the right reads with the ball in his hands, rather that be making a play for himself or making a play for teammates. On an early possession, he made a high-level read after ghosting the screen and receiving the pass on the short-roll to deliver a touch pass to the wide open corner shooter for the assist. On the defensive end of the ball, Keasey was a strong presence and stayed engaged. He played with degrees of physicality, as he was able to contain quicker baller handlers without fouling and rotate into the paint promptly to deny and deter drives while protecting the rim.
