Rob’s Class 4A Postseason Recap 2-21-23

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Class 4A tipped off its postseason on Monday with games being contested around the state. Teams advanced to Thursday’s Substate semifinals with state qualifiers being decided on Feb. 28.

Here’s a look at Monday’s results:

SUBSTATE 1

-Sioux City West (12-11) advanced to take on sixth-ranked Norwalk on Thursday after taking down Sioux City North, 69-46, on Monday. Senior Keavian Hayes Keavian Hayes 6'2" | SG Sioux City West | 2023 State IA scored 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the win, while classmate Lamarion Mothershead Lamarion Mothershead 6'3" | SF Sioux City West | 2023 State IA added 18 points.

-Johnston (11-11) topped Council Bluffs Jefferson, 78-37, on Monday setting up a Thursday’s meeting with No. 9 Sioux City East. The Dragons have been led by sophomore Jalen Richardson Jalen Richardson 6'4" | SF Johnston | 2025 State IA ‘s 11.2 points per game.

SUBSTATE 2

-No. 10 Ankeny Centennial awaits Iowa City West (12-10) after the Trojans took down Cedar Rapids Prairie, 65-44, on Monday. Sophomore Jack McCaffery Jack McCaffery 6'8" | SF Iowa City West | 2025 State IA has paced them with 17.4 points and 7.6 rebounds in ’22-23.

-Dowling Catholic (10-12) travels to No. 8 Cedar Falls Thursday as a result of the Maroons’ 84-59 victory against Fort Dodge on Monday. Senior Jack Ode Jack Ode 6'3" Dowling Catholic | 2023 IA and Joey Coppola Joey Coppola 5'11" | PG Dowling Catholic | 2024 State IA IV, a junior, led the winners with 14 points apiece. Senior   Davis Scheck Davis Scheck 5'11" | SG Dowling Catholic | 2023 State IA added 13 for Dowling.

SUBSTATE 3

-Muscatine (6-16) triumphed at Davenport Central, 70-59, on Monday in advancing to take No. 7 Dubuque Senior on Thursday. Luke Wieskamp Luke Wieskamp 6'6" | SF Brophy Prep | 2025 AZ scored a career-best 29 points for the Muskies, while fellow sophomore Kayvion Hodges Kayvion Hodges 6'1" | SF Muscatine | 2025 State IA matched a career-best by scoring 26.

-On the other half of the bracket, Pleasant Valley (17-5) will take on rival Bettendorf Thursday after the Spartans defeated Dubuque Hempstead, 79-52. Senior Connor Borbeck Connor Borbeck 6'2" | SG Pleasant Valley | 2023 State IA has led them with 12.3 points per game this season.

SUBSTATE 4

-Davenport West (13-9) heads to top-ranked Cedar Rapids Kennedy Thursday after knocking off Davenport North, 85-46, on Monday. Junior Jermilyn Gardner Jermilyn Gardner 5'8" | PG Davenport West | 2024 State IA has paced the Falcons with 17.6 points an outing this winter.

-Burlington (16-6) will meet up with North Scott on Thursday following the Grayhounds 81-54 victory against Clinton on Monday. Senior Merquiche Lewis Jr. has given the ‘Hounds 24.4 points a game.

SUBSTATE 5

-Waterloo East (13-8) will be at fourth-ranked West Des Moines Valley next after eliminating Iowa City High, 80-74, on Monday. The Trojans have been led by senior Kewone Jones Kewone Jones 6'2" | SF Waterloo East | 2023 State IA ‘ 19.3 points a contest this winter.

-Waterloo West awaits Cedar Rapids Washington (13-9) after the Warriors took care of Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 85-58, on Monday. They got 30 points from Jesse Sellers Jesse Sellers 5'10" | PG Cedar Rapids Washington | 2023 State IA , a senior, and 13 points and seven rebounds from his classmate, Traijan Sain Traijan Sain 6'5" | SF Cedar Rapids Washington | 2023 State IA .

SUBSTATE 6

-Linn-Mar (9-13) moved on to face No. 5 Indianola on Thursday with a 76-63 victory against Iowa City Liberty on Monday. Sophomore Davis Kern Davis Kern 6'8" | PF Linn-Mar | 2025 State IA netted 31 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the winners, who also received 11 points and five assists from Owen Havlik Owen Havlik 6'2" Linn-Mar | 2024 IA , a junior.

-Ames awaits Ankeny (9-14) on Thursday following the Hawks’ 76-52 win Monday against Ottumwa. Junior Lio Aguirre Lio Aguirre 6'3" | SF Ankeny | 2024 State IA led them with 27 points and eight boards. Carson Johnson Carson Johnson 6'0" | PG Ankeny | 2024 State IA added 21 points and six assists in victory.

SUBSTATE 7

-Des Moines Lincoln (11-12) will be at No. 3 Waukee Northwestern Thursday after topping Marshalltown, 69-60, on Monday. The Railsplitters were paced by junior Trovary Cavil Trovary Cavil 5'11" | PG Johnston | 2024 State IA ‘s 35 points and five assists with Kyrell Moore Kyrell Moore 6'2" Des Moines Lincoln | 2023 IA , a senior, adding 11 points, six rebounds and two steals.

-Southeast Polk (9-14) remained alive with a 64-58 win against Mason City on Monday. Ram sophomore Bode Goodman Bode Goodman 6'1" Southeast Polk | 2025 IA scored 21 points, and Riley Edwards Riley Edwards 6'3" | SG Southeast Polk | 2023 State IA , a senior, added 20 with 10 rebounds for the victors.

SUBSTATE 8

-Second-ranked Waukee will play host to Urbandale (10-13) on Thursday following the J-Hawks’ 69-44 win against Des Moines East on Monday. Senior Cooper Hardersen Cooper Hardersen 6'1" | PG Urbandale | 2023 State IA and Grant Uecker Grant Uecker 6'2" | PG Urbandale | 2024 State IA , a junior, scored 15 points apiece for them, while Jack Craig added 13.

-Dallas Center-Grimes (13-9) will be at Council Bluffs Abe Lincoln on Thursday after getting by Des Moines North, 73-63, on Monday. Juniors Jonathan Howard Jonathan Howard 6'1" | SG Dallas Center-Grimes | 2024 State IA (12.5 PPG) and Calix Cahill Calix Cahill 6'5" | PF Dallas Center-Grimes | 2024 State IA (11.3 PPG, 8.4 RPG) have led the Mustangs this season.
