Here’s who’s moving on after a fun set of district finals:
SUBSTATE 1
-Seventh-ranked Remsen St. Mary’s (21-2) reigned supreme in District 1 Monday night at Sioux Center High. The Hawks topped South O’Brien, 68-51. Jaxon Bunkers Jaxon Bunkers 5'11" | SF St. Mary's, Remsen | 2023 State IA (15.7 PPG, 5.7 RPG, 5.4 APG) and Collin Homan Collin Homan 6'5" | PF Remsen, St. Mary's | 2025 State IA (15.0 PPG, 7.7 RPG) have been leading them in scoring, rebounding and assists this season.
-Saturday at Le Mars Community, St. Mary’s will take on Gehlen Catholic (20-5), winners of District 2. The Jays edged No. 10 Newell-Fonda, 79-77. Keaten Bonderson Keaten Bonderson 6'0" | PG Gehlen Catholic | 2023 State IA led the winners with 40 points, setting the school’s single-season scoring record in the process.
SUBSTATE 2
-Sixth-ranked Dunkerton (23-1) advanced with a 52-34 triumph against South Hamilton in District 3. Preston Gillespie Preston Gillespie 6'3" | SF Dunkerton | 2023 State IA led the way for the Raiders with 20 points.
-Dunkerton next matches up with Newman Catholic (20-4) Saturday at Hampton-Dumont. The Knights defeated North Union, 65-57, Tuesday in District 4. Doug Taylor tossed in 27 points for the winners.
SUBSTATE 3
-No. 2 North Linn (23-0) eased into the title game with a 78-45 victory against Maquoketa, 78-45, Tuesday in District 5 at Independence. Junior Ty Pflughaupt Ty Pflughaupt 6'4" | SF North Linn | 2024 State IA scored 22 points, grabbed six rebounds, handed out four assists and blocked three shots for the winners, while teammate Tate Haughenbury Tate Haughenbury 6'5" | PF North Linn | 2023 State IA , a senior, added 11 points, 11 boards, five assists, two blocks and two steals. Ben Wheatley Ben Wheatley 6'1" | SG North Linn | 2023 State IA scored 19 for the victors.
-North Linn meets up with Wapsie Valley Saturday at West Delaware. The Warriors (20-4) took care of Central City, 71-42, in Tuesday’s District 6 finale at Starmont. Andrew Westpfahl Andrew Westpfahl 5'8" | SG Wapsie Valley | 2023 State IA and Mason Harter Mason Harter 6'6" | PF Wapsie Valley | 2023 State IA led them with 24 points apiece, Casey O’Donnell Casey O’Donnell 6'4" | PF Wapsie Valley | 2023 State IA scored 12 for the winners.
SUBSTATE 4
-Unranked New London (18-6) continued its postseason march with a 58-52 win against Winfield-Mount Union in Tuesday’s District 7 championship at Mediapolis. Seniors Blaise Porter Blaise Porter 6'1" | PG New London | 2023 State #298 Nation IA (25.0 PPG, 8.4 RPG) and Kade Benjamin Kade Benjamin 6'6" | PF New London | 2023 State IA (19.2 PPG, 8.7 RPG) have led the Tigers in scoring and rebounding during ’22-23.
-New London faces Marquette Catholic Saturday at Solon. Marquette Catholic bested Prince of Peace, 76-56, in Tuesday’s District 8 final at Maquoketa. Sophomore Spencer Roeder Spencer Roeder 6'5" | PF Maquette Catholic | 2025 State IA (13.0 PPG, 6.2 RPG) has stood out for the winners this season.
SUBSTATE 5
-Pencil in eighth-ranked Baxter (20-1-1) to the Substate 5 championship game after the Bolts knocked off Montezuma, 82-69, in Tuesday’s District 9 final at Pleasantville. They have been led by seniors Carson Scroggins Carson Scroggins 6'4" | PF Baxter | 2023 State IA (20.4 PPG, 6.6 RPG) and Cody Damman (12.7 PPG, 5.4 APG) this winter.
-Baxter moves on to meet No. 9 Madrid, 67-59 winners against Mount Ayr in Tuesday’s District 10 action at Nodaway Valley. The Tigers (21-2) were paced by sophomore Toryn Severson Toryn Severson 6'4" | SG Madrid | 2025 State IA ‘s 19 points and nine rebounds. Jackson Newell Jackson Newell 6'8" | C Madrid | 2023 IA (13 points, 10 boards, seven blocks) and Fabian Ortiz-Alaniz (18 points, 5-6 3PT FG) also shined for the victors.
SUBSTATE 6
-Third-rated Gladbrook-Reinbeck (22-2) advanced with a 77-57 District 11 triumph against Keota Tuesday at Grinnell Community. Senior William Kiburis William Kiburis 6'4" | PG Gladbrook-Reinbeck | 2023 State IA led the way with 33 points, nine rebounds, six assists, five steals and two blocks. Luke Riffey Luke Riffey 6'0" | SG Gladbrook-Reinbeck | 2023 State IA contributed 13 points and four assists to the cause.
-The Rebels next play Lynnville-Sully in Saturday’s Substate final at Marshalltown. The Hawks (22-2) took out North Mahaska, 62-42, Tuesday in District 12 at Knoxville. Senior Conner Maston Conner Maston 6'1" | SG Lynnville-Sully | 2023 State IA tallied 22 points and seven rebounds for the winners, while Mitchell Miller Mitchell Miller 6'2" | SG Lynnville-Sully | 2024 State IA (15 points) and Preston Rodibaugh Preston Rodibaugh 6'3" | SG Lynnville-Sully | 2023 State IA (10) also scored in double figures.
SUBSTATE 7
-Top-ranked Grandview Christian (23-0) overwhelmed Lenox, 94-47, in Tuesday’s District 13 matchup at Creston. The Thunder received 43 points and four assists from senior Josh Sanderson Josh Sanderson 5'10" | PG Grand View Christian | 2023 State IA . Sophomore Emiliano Barrantes Emiliano Barrantes 6'9" | PF Grand View Christian | 2025 State IA snagged 15 rebounds to go with 12 points for the winners.
-ACGC (16-8) awaits Grandview Christian in Saturday’s substate championship contest at Dallas-Center Grimes. The Chargers bested Coon Rapids-Bayard, 67-42, in Tuesday’s District 14 finale at Hoover. Brock Littler Brock Littler 5'8" | PG ACGC | 2023 State IA (15.7 PPG, 4.3 APG) and Lance Bunde (13.2 PPG, 5.9 RPG) have been leading ACGC this season.
SUBSTATE 8
-No. 4 West Harrison (22-1) moved on with a 71-52 victory against Exira-EHK in Tuesday’s District 15 title game at Harlan. The Hawkeyes were led by senior Mason King Mason King 5'10" | PG West Harrison | 2023 State IA ‘s 24 points and four assists, while his teammates, Koleson Evans Koleson Evans 6'6" | SF West Harrison | 2023 State IA and Sage Evans Sage Evans 6'2" | PF West Harrison | 2023 State IA , combined for 35 points and 28 rebounds.
-West Harrison faces off with Bedford in Saturday’s substate title game at Glenwood. The Bulldogs (21-3) advanced with a 44-35 win against East Mills in Tuesday’s District 16 finale at Shenandoah. They received 14 points and five rebounds from junior Silas Walston, while sophomore Cal Peterman Cal Peterman 6'2" | PG Bedford | 2025 IA added seven points and nine boards during the victory.
