Continue ReadingIt only took three quarters of play (and actually maybe less) for the Mercer-signee to lead his team to another Region title. The Eagles jumped out on Union Grove 14-0 and built a 41-23 halftime lead, Thomas with 21 of his game-high 22 points in the first half. David was his usual electric self, a blur in transition, scoring on a pair of layups but also had his jumper working, canning two threes and sinking a pair of jumpers. When Thomas’ jump shot is on – which it usually is – he’s incredibly difficult to stop. David plays at a different speed than everyone else on the floor.
McKennie has elevated himself into being one of the best slashing seniors the state has to offer, especially from the point guard position. His explosive athleticism gets him to the rim in a blink, getting low when turning corners and erupting up to the rim. He’s a nightmare defender with his lateral quickness. Khylan tallied 14 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and 1 block in three quarters. D-II schools should seriously consider the tone-setter.
Mastin may not have lit up the scoreboard, but make no mistake he was a catalyst in igniting Eagle’s Landing’s elite transition offense. Clark scooped up 4 points, 13 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals and 1 block. His influence was felt all over the floor. He did an exceptional job crashing in for rebounds, not waiting for outlet passes and doing the dirty work himself. He made good reads off the dribble, always surveying for the dump off assist.

Things didn’t go Union Grove’s way, but Johnson was a fearless competitor that lifted the Wolverines. The veteran posted 14 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals and 2 blocks. He had success getting to his floater and drew fouls downhill, going 4-8 from the line.
With Dutchtown electing to sit their usual starters, Austin Mosby-Weems Austin Mosby-Weems 6’3″ | CG Dutchtown | 2025 State GA stepped up, grabbing the three-seed for the Bulldogs. I really liked what I saw in my first viewing. Austin passes the eye-test right away. He has good size on the perimeter and has been in the weight room at an early age. What did it for me was how smooth and effective Mosby-Weems was when getting to his spots. His pull-up jumper was always on target as he played with balance, never rushed by the defense. He finished with 13 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal. The more minutes Mosby-Weems gets, the more heads he will turn.
Chappelle is an interesting prospect. He has great length and mobility. Originally more of a post, Joah has grown his game into becoming a swingman. The lefty can hit the three and make plays off the dribble, using a pull-up jumper and a floater. He caught a lob and also drew fouls around the rim. Joah did commit a few charges and will need to improve his recognition of what the defense is setting him up for, but there is a lot to like about his game, especially considering his upside defensively as a multi-positional defender. Joah recorded 13 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal and 3 blocks.
The viral phrase “stroke that thang cuzzo” could be applied to Jaylen Sanford Jaylen Sanford 6’1″ | CG Jones County | 2023 State GA ‘s game. The senior lit up the defense, especially in the first half as he scorched the nets with 18 of his game-high 23 points coming over the first 16 minutes. Sanford is a talented perimeter scorer that creates separation when getting to his jumper. He netted 4 threes and found points in the mid-range off the bounce. Sanford isn’t skinny by any means, but a year in a college weight room could do wonders for him. Sanford’s scoring ability should translate well to the next level. He could be an impact maker in a year or two.
