SubscribeOne of the most anticipated events of the year is the annual B|JV Championships. The end-of-the-season tournament features freshmen and JV teams from around the valley. The event provides a perfect opportunity to get a glimpse of the next wave of talent. I pulled up to check out the final day of the event here are my notes.
Good two way guard that forced steals on ball and when he played the passing lane. Had a knack for finishing in the lane, and making plays throughout the game. Played with good aggression, speed and quickness.
Foothill always seems to have big physical bigs, Bair could be next up. Two way athlete that also plays on the gridiron, Bair played with effort and energy, grabbing rebounds, on both the offensive and defensive glass. High IQ, vocal leader, he was one of the better teammates I saw on the day.
Heady floor general with some offensive skill. Dickel can be effective playing downhill, but he also displayed some strong COD’s, using crossover and between the legs dribbles to shake defenders.
He’s small but skilled. The sophomore guard was pesky on ball, and showed some handle and the ability to slither into the paint and finish.
Givens is a card carrying memeber of my all airport team. He has tremendous length, that makes him look taller than his 6’3 frame. His game is evolving as well, has the ability to make shots, and draws rain with the arc he puts on it. He also showed flashes of ball skills, splitting zone gaps with 2 dribbles or less, before hitting teammates.
Tyler stood out for me because of his length and attitude, and that was even before speaking with his Varsity Head Coach. He plays with terrific energy, and is reffered to as a “Dennis Rodman” type by longtime Basic coach Leonard Taylor. Like the Worm, he showed some quick 1st jump ability, grabbing rebounds, and blocking shots.
Rabb was another long, young athletic big. At about 6’5 – 6’6 he showed good mobility, fluidly sprinting the floor. He also showed some skill, catching passing, and finishing from 10 feet in.
Stafford is a player to keep an eye on. He has a good frame, complete with definition in his upper body. Showed the ability to make threes, which is huge, as he was a problem when playing downhill and through contact. If he continues to develop throughout the summer, he could be a key future piece for the Wolves program.
Washington is a varsity football player, and would probably be a varsity basketball one at any other program in the state. He has a smooth game, and showed the ability to slash to the bucket as well as knock down shots in catch and shoot situations.
Reminds me of former Desert Oasis forward, Mason M’ichl. Baudreau is big and athletic, and runs the floor well. Once a game makes a play that has you believeing your’re looking at a D1 prospect, and today was no exception as the center had a monster one handed tip dunk, that may or may not have counted, but showed his atheticism. Watching him shoot free throws it’s not difficult to imagine him being able to stretch the floor in the future.
Young player with a good combination of size and skill that has shown improvement in his game. Showed the ability to shoot the ball from behind the three point line, and was accurate from mid range. His ability to play the high post was impressive as he made quick reads, hitting cutters or knocking down the free throw jumper.
Ceasar provided me with one of those forced to watch moments. I only got to see a half of the Durango game, but he definetly stood out. On my way out the door, the PG kept me in the gym, showing some dynamic shot making ability. He showed some quickness, played with a good burst and displayed a solid pull up game.
Bouncy athlete, that does not need the ball in his hands to make plays. He impacted the game with his ability to get offensive rebounds, and finish transition plays. The type of athlete that consistently plays above the rim, he also flashed glimpses of an improved face up game. He and Oba formed one of the top tandems at the event.
