Here’s a look at some of the top seniors who rank among the state’s leading scorers – and how they have been getting their buckets (scoring stats are through 2/19).
Jackson Shelstad Jackson Shelstad 6'0" | PG West Linn | 2023 State #55 Nation OR (2023 West Linn) – 29.0 ppg
On pace to lead 6A in scoring for the second year in a row, Shelstad has actually done things a little differently this season. In years past he piled up points from the three-point line, but this year he’s actually not shooting as well from distance at under 40 percent. But on twos inside of the line, whether it’s pull-ups or especially around the rim, he’s absolutely sizzling just under 70 percent. We’d argue the Oregon signee’s layup package rivals practically that of any guard in the country.
Josiah Lake Josiah Lake 6'1" | PG Tualatin | 2023 State OR (2023 Tualatin) – 25.2 ppg
Lake has gotten buckets at all three levels and when he’s cooking, his step-back three is lethal out past the high school three-point line. But where Lake has really excelled is getting to the hoop and if he’s not finishing the rim, he’s drawing contact and getting to the free throw line. This season games where Lake has made double-digit free throws have not been uncommon and he’s converting them at a high percentage.
Esyah Pippa-White Esyah Pippa-White 6'2" | PG Gresham | 2023 State OR (2023 Gresham) – 23.6 ppg
One of the scoring leaders ever since his sophomore season, Pippa-White is still putting up plenty of points – including a couple of 42-point efforts – despite the fact Gresham’s offense has multiple options this season. He’s still getting to the hoop for many of his points, but his improved jumper has led to plenty of games with multiple three-point field goals made. Pippa-White is one of the few top scorers to be a double-double threat with assists as well.
Moroni Seely-Roberts Moroni Seely-Roberts 6'6" | SF Lincoln | 2023 State OR (2023 Lincoln) – 23.3 ppg
We maintain that if not for the pandemic, Seely-Roberts would have threatened Kevin Love’s all-time career scoring record. He’s maintained his high-scoring output as a senior, doing most of his damage around the hoop and on drives, using his physicality to score over and through opponents. Seely-Roberts has also established himself as a knock-down shooter of the three at the top of the key and has shown some excellent interior passing to go along with all the points.
Kavon Bradford Kavon Bradford 6'2" | CG Benson | 2023 State OR (2023 Benson) – 21.3 ppg
Out of everyone on the top scoring list, Bradford is the one that’s the biggest triple-double threat as at last check, he was also averaging double digits in rebounding. The lefty can score both with or without the basketball, whether operating on the elbow against the zone or with the ball in his hands against man defense. His perimeter jumper has improved and he remains one of the best finishers at the rim in the state for a guard.
Malachi Seely-Roberts Malachi Seely-Roberts 6'8" | SF Lincoln | 2023 State OR (2023 Lincoln) – 19.5 ppg
One thing that Seely-Roberts has always been known for is his deep range on his shot. The senior can catch and shoot, or pull up on the break to hit threes and he’s continued to do that this season. However, it isn’t just about launching bombs for Seely-Roberts this season as he’s been getting points off of drives and also posting up inside, using his soft touch and length to convert over defenders.
Liam Spencer Liam Spencer 6'3" | CG Sprague | 2023 State OR (2023 Sprague) – 19.3 ppg
One of the top hidden scorers in all of the state, Spencer has emerged as Sprague’s go-to guy this season. He’s tremendous coming off of screens or converting catch-and-shoot opportunities but can also put the ball on the floor a bit and use some strength to power through smaller defenders. The three remains his specialty however and he’s already broken the school record for threes made in a season.
Kalim Brown Kalim Brown 6'0" | CG Tigard | 2023 State OR (2023 Tigard) – 18.2 ppg
Brown was Tigard’s leading scorer last season and has continued his status this year despite the fact the Tigers have four guys that average double figures. The senior’s bread-and-butter remains his pull-up jumper from 15-19 feet but has also been pretty good at hitting spot-up threes. Brown has also gotten a lot of points through his defense as steals have led to easy transition buckets.
