Jordan Frison, Memphis Overton: Frison had 44 points in a 108-67 win over Memphis Central. Xavier Alexander had 17. Erin Hardwick added 14. Jailen Hardaway provided 13.
Throughout Frison’s high school basketball career, he’s never been on a team that’s won a district title. The senior point guard has never been close to competing for a TSSAA Division 1 Class 4A boys’ state championship. Well, this season, the reality of winning a 4A District 16 regular season title and possibly a 4A District 16 tournament championship aren’t farfetched with the way the Wolverines have been playing thus far in league play.
“We have played a lot of games this year. It’s been tough on our bodies, but we have turned a corner since district play has started,” Frison said about a Memphis Overton team that’s 4-0 in league play after defeating Whitehaven Friday night. “Our team’s defense has been stellar. We have been holding teams under their season average.
“If we continue to buy in, I don’t see a limit on how far we can go.”
Seth Grandberry, Lausanne: Grandberry had 23 points in his team’s 73-60 win over Northpoint Christian. Carson Boyle had 14. Tre Davis added 11.
Like Frison, Grandberry is another prospect that hasn’t had much postseason success. Coming from Millington, where he spent the past three seasons, to Lausanne, the expectations are much higher since he’s playing for a head coach in Marvis Davis who has three TSSAA Division II Class A boys’ state titles under his belt. Thus far, it looks as if the senior guard is prepared to help the Lynx hang another banner.
In Friday night’s win over the Trojans, Grandberry did a great job of taking what the defense gave him. He took quality shots from the perimeter and pushed the basketball in transition.
“I think about it every day,” said Grandberry, who scored 10 of his 23 points in the first quarter in the win. “I’m picturing us at state every day. I’m just ready for it. We got a real chance of holding up that gold ball.”
Christian Gilliland, Northpoint Christian: Gilliland led the Trojans with 27 points against the Lausanne Lynx.
