One. The Finish. The Pirates and Eagles were playing a very close game until the one minute stretch that saw Patrick Bath Patrick Bath 6'9" | C Totino Grace | 2023 State MN miss two foul shots (he was 7 of 8 from the foul line before that) followed by Casmir Chavis Casmir Chavis 6'2" | PG Park Center | 2024 State #170 Nation MN kicking out to JJ Ware JJ Ware 6'6" | SF Park Center | 2023 State MN for a clutch three. That triple was the play that really gave PC the gap they needed. And the next time down Ware (who scored a game high 19 points) had a putback finish that really secured the victory.
Two. The Creators. If you looked deeper into this game you would likely see that Totino-Grace point guard Taison Chatman Taison Chatman 6'4" | PG Totino Grace | 2023 State #35 Nation MN and Park Center point guard Casmir Chavis Casmir Chavis 6'2" | PG Park Center | 2024 State #170 Nation MN created an equal number of chances for their respective teams. The difference was that Chatman had three assists, and Chavis ten (Chavis also scored 14 points but took 17 shots to get to those 14). And the difference there, Chatman was created wide open threes for his team while Chavis was getting his team wide open shots at the cup. Obviously it’s easier to make an open lay-up than an open three. But to expand on that further…..
Three. The Other Team Factors. Those Chavis passes up the floor in the first half especially, they came in transition as the Pirates turned every Eagle long miss and turnover (there seemed to be many from TG) into an open floor lay-up or the occasional three. Meanwhile, the Eagles got open threes but they made only 3 of 22 last night. That’s right, three of 22!
Four. CJ Second Half. Against Lakeville North O’Hara had no points at the break, and then 15 in half two. Last night he was 1 of 6 from the floor in half one, and then scored 14 points in the second half to get his total to 16 points. O’Hara not only got to the rim to score consistently in the second half, I thought he did a nice job pressuring whatever Eagle came near him and he did a solid job on Chatman.
Five. Humphries Fouls Out. It certainly didn’t help that around half way through half two Tommy Humphries Tommy Humphries 6'5" | SF Totino-Grace | 2023 State #283 Nation MN picked up his fourth foul. He had to step back on the floor with seven minutes to go in the half and 30 seconds later Tommy fouled out. Humphries did have a double-double at 11 points and 10 rebounds while Patrick Bath Patrick Bath 6'9" | C Totino Grace | 2023 State MN had nine points and ten boards. Isaiah Johnson Isaiah Johnson 6'7" | SF Totino-Grace | 2024 State #135 Nation MN stepped in to score a team high 15 points.
