Between Covington Catholic (KY), Pinkerington (OH) and Shady Springs (WV), there was a host of non-Florida talent that stood out throughout the week. Here were my favorite 3 guys from outside the Sunshine State:
Chapman was by far one of my favorite players of the Kingdom. On both ends, Chapman is the full D1-level package. Offensively, Chapman was able to knock down shots from anywhere on the floor, both off the dribble and catch and shoot. Chapman’s strength and high IQ play style made him a consistent threat going downhill, especially because he could take huge hits around the rim and still finish with confidence. His IQ was evident by his incredible court vision and impeccable defensive decision making, forcing defenses to avoid passing the ball anywhere near him. Chapman was this team’s main threat all week, and he showed that not only is he good enough to play college basketball, but he will continue to thrive at the next level.
Ipsaro has been one of the best players I have watched since I saw him last winter at the Battle @ The Villages. This year, he took his team of Kentucky shooters to Ocala and dominated en route to a 5th place finish at the Kingdom of the Sun. Ipsaro is one of the most in-control players I have scouted. Whether he is initiating the offense or sprinting for a shot on the fast break, Ipsaro is calm, collected, and makes the right read. His passing is an absolute treat, as he was able to find gaps in opposing defenses to set up his teammates for really easy looks. He found passing lanes and was great on the ball and really led the Covington team to victory every chance he could. Ipsaro does everything with poise, from mid range jump shooting to defensive contesting. The Miami (OH) commit will have to take some time to continue developing his body, but with a breadth of basketball knowledge and a poised, mature approach to the game, Ipsaro will be a wonderful addition to the RedHawks next season.
There were a ton of really good contributors for Covington Catholic all week, but Kascyl McGillis Kascyl McGillis 6’2″ | SG Covington Catholic | 2023 State KY takes the cake as the one who stood out the most. While his name may seem smooth, his shooting stroke was far smoother. Kascyl absolutely lit up Olympia in the first half of their eventual quarterfinal loss. At 6-2 and a stockier build, McGillis was able to muscle down the lane if needed before inevitably kicking the ball out to one of Covington’s other shooters (maybe his freshman brother Athens). McGillis was the go-to second option for one of the tournament’s most impressive teams, and his production will be vital for Covington as they continue this season.
