Backdrop – These two teams are building up quite a rivalry. Losee eliminated SLAM last season 54-52 in the playoffs, en route to making a run at the 3A Final Four, before falling to a great Elko team who would eventually go on to win the title. Many of the same players from the game last season returned this year, as these two young teams are set up for the long haul. The game was played in front of a packed crowd at Losee and saw both teams give their all. After a hard-fought battle, the Lions came away with another narrow victory, winning 64-60.
Most Impactful Players
He’s one of the best defensive players in the state. The lions got off to a fast start behind Richardson’s offense, and it wasn’t until he picked up his 2nd foul in the first half, that the Bulls begin making their run. Richardson returned in the 2nd half, rebounding, and blocking shots at a high level.
Best Offensive Player
Member of my all showtime team. Everytime I’ve shown up he shows out. Haylock hit a slew of trey’s and made his Free Throws but it was his improved handle that impressed on this night. Haylock showed some PG skills, weaving through full court pressure and splitting traps on more than one occasion. His first half barrage of threes was part of an initial haymaker thrown by the Lions.
Turning Point
It looked like the Lions were ready to put the game away, before Nevil’s steal late in the 4th cut the lead to four. In addition to the obvious, the play swung the momentum, as the Bulldogs would come all the way back to tie the game at one point.
Most Athletic
There were a couple of other really good athletes in this game, however Cade’s speed really stood out. His ability to go from 0 – 60 is tangible when sitting on the floor. Cade was a monster going downhill, and used his brute speed for several coast to coast drives and finishes.
Best Prospect
The best thing about this big man is his movement. He changes ends well, and I found myself grading his athletic ability higher and higher as the night wore on. He displayed good hands, and I was impressed with his ability to catch and finish. He had more than a couple of finishes above rim.
Best Freshman
Good looking young prospect for Losee. Daniel has a good frame, and was a nice addition, helping Losee handle the ball. His best skill was his ability to get downhill. He finished with 4 points in a game the Lions won by 4.
Glue Guy
Just played hard and with an edge. I was impressed with his ability to get every rebound. Lozano played like his hair was on fire, diving into the lane to routinely snatch away potential rebounds from opponents. I thought his ability to offensive rebound was key in helping the Bulls survive Losee’s early game haymakers.
