But the Kittens proved resilient Thursday to avoid the same fate against Northeast in the teams’ matchup in the third-place game of the EBR Boys’ Basketball Tournament.
The Vikings mounted a strong run to end the first quarter with the lead, but seniors D’Lloyd Joseph and Jonathan Butler helped Southern Lab answer and pull away to a 76-64 victory.
D’Lloyd Joseph (2023)
The senior forward was both active and acrobatic in the lane en route to 30 points and at least half a dozen rebounds. The springy leaper lived in and around the lane and scored many of his 11 field goals with impressive body control on up-and-unders or otherwise around defenders. When he couldn’t avoid the the contact, he added 8-for-12 shooting from the foul line, including a first-quarter and-one play. Joseph also swiped at least three steals.
Jonathan Butler (5’9″ | 2023)
The senior guard was steady hand at the helm of the offense, pushing the pace early to take the initial lead and helping settle the Kittens down late, navigate the press-break and weather Northeast’s final comeback push. Butler also provided all four of Southern Lab’s 3-pointers on the night to finish with 14 points and dished out at least three assists
Braylon Brown (2025)
The sophomore guard rose to the occasion at the foul line in the second half to hit eight of his 11 attempts to help secure the victory. Brown scored 10 of his 14 points overall after the break.
J’Maurian Belin (6’4″ | 2023)
The Vikings’ big standout scored five straight points in the first quarter — an inside basket, rebound and 3 — to spark a 10-3 run that briefly took the lead and provided the primary offensive firepower inside, outside — with three 3-pointers overall — and from the foul line to try to keep Northeast in the game. He was aggressive attacking, particularly to his right and particularly during a 16-point third quarter, en route to a 30-point night.. He also grabbed at least five rebounds and a steal and dished out a couple of nice transition assists.
Derrick Cavalier (6’0″ | 2025)
The sophomore thrived on the boards with a nonstop motor and good timing that had him snatch at least 11 rebounds despite being one of the shorter players in the lane on most of those occasions. He finished with five points on a free-throw, put back and driving basket.
