It’s no surprise that the majority of the rankings are filled with players from large 4A or 5A schools. That makes it even more impressive when guys from some of the smaller schools crack the list. In this article, we give some love to some of the small school players who put their names on the rankings map.
Hannig spent some time at both 5A Faith Lutheran and Palo Verde, so it’s a little skewed. Nevertheless, look for the guard to have a strong year for 2A lincoln county. Hannig has the ability to be a playmaker, along with creating buckets on his own with his transition finishing ability.
White is the engine for a Mineral County program that routinely plays for state championships. The guard is a good defender, who will play both backcourt spots. He’s currently leading the Serpents in scoring at nine per game. He is a top 100 ranked player in the class.
Goose is a good glue guy for the state champs. The forward scores around the basket, and helps the squad out on the backboards. He is a top 100 guy in the rankings.
Bevacqua is the reigning 2A POY, and state champion. The PG has good wiggle to his game, and is highly skilled with both his shooting and handling. He lands in the rankings as a top 20 player meaning he’s a potential scholarship athlete as well.
Coleman is a man on a mission, looking to help Democracy Prep regain the 2A crown. He is one of the better on ball defenders, and that combined with his leadership and playmaking make him one of the top guards in all of Las Vegas, let alone the 2A division. Look for Coleman to spearhead a loaded Democracy Prep squad.
Nevil plays hard, which is the skill I like most about him. In addition to the energy, he brings some skill to the team, showing the ability to create offense for himself off dribble drives and transition opportunities. The guard is the heart of a SLAM club that has started the season undefeated, entering the rankings as a top 100 player.
I’m excited to watch Killoran this season, as he prepares to help GV Christian defend their title. The cerebral, do it all point forward will probably play multiple positions for the team, and his ability to faciliate and score will be a huge factor in GVC reaching their team goals this season. He is a top 100 player as of the most recent rankings.
Valencia is the reigning king of 1A and has been for most of his high school career. The big man is a walking double double, with the attitude and the skills to carry his squad back to the title. The nimble footed big lands in the rankings as a top 50 prospect.
Foreman should have made my all glass cleaner team. The ommission hasn’t stopped the forward from doing what he does best, as he has led SLAM in rebounding for the better part of the season. His defense and rebounding have helped him crack the top 100 of the rankings and should give 3A SLAM a title opportunity this season.
I was fortunate to have just watched Woodbury during my Boulder City Team Preview. He’s a no-nonsense player that brings maturity to a BC squad looking to get back to the 3A championship game. They will need the guard to protect the ball, shoot it and organize the team. The PG does all of these things at a high level, hence his near top 100 ranking.
Jones is another of the BC players that I recently saw during their team preview. He will be a key piece to the team, providing depth along with some perimeter scoring, as BC looks to return to the 3A championship game.
Pendleton is a player that could also be a potential stockriser. Like the other BC players, I saw him recently when I went to check out the school, and his size and length is the perfect addition to a squad that takes time in defending the perimeter. Pendleton will be contributing to a school looking to claim the 3A title, after reaching the championship game last year.
Lemmel brings a lot of intangibles to BC. He has some toghness and is a terrific compeitor. He has played in 6 of the 7 games for the Eagles, proving to be one of the better per minute rebounders averaging nearly 4 per game.
Pantea is looking to put together another big season for for 2A LMCA. The guard has good skills on both sides of the ball, and will contribute to the team as a defender, playmaker and scorer.
Ventura pairs with Pantea to give LMCA a terrific backcourt. The offensively gifted guard has shown good shooting ability, as well as the ability to finish plays around the rim. He looks to help LMCA reach the 2A playoffs.
