I recently did the same with January in this article : https://prephoops.com/2022/12/northwest-conference-nwc-games-to-keep-an-eye-on-in-january/ . Now I wanted to take a look back in the month of December and see which games in the NWC turned out to be games of the month!
December 2nd: Kings 61 Blaine 59 (@ Blaine HS)
This game featured 2 of the top 1A schools in the entire state. It was a big test for both teams with Blaine proving they can still hang with the top level teams this season. Carson Lehnert Carson Lehnert 6'3" | SG Blaine | 2023 State WA almost won this game for the Borderites, missing a half court heave as time ran out. These teams could meet again come state tournament time.
December 8th: Sehome 68 Meridian 65 OT (@ Meridian HS)
I’m going to be honest, this is not a game that I personally thought would be this close / this good of a game. I believe the Mariners overlooked the young Trojans and let them get off to a big lead in the first half. The Trojans were sinking 3’s left and right to start the game but the Mariners climbed back into the game to in in overtime.
December 9th: Mount Vernon 59 Burlington-Edison 61 (@ Burlington-Edison HS)
This game is one to look out for every year. Both teams are normally fairly competitive within the NWC which gives this rivalry more meaning. The Tigers pulled off a close victory this year with the help from senior Blaine Granberg Blaine Granberg 6'3" | CG Burlington-Edison | 2023 State WA who helped lead the team with a 20+ point game. The Bulldogs are a young squad, so they have a good chance to take this battle of the bridge next year.
December 22nd: Lynden 63 Gig Harbor 70 (@ Gig Harbor HS)
This game featured arguably the best 2A team in the state in the defending state champion Lynden Lions and a Gig Harbor team who could make a deep run in the 3A classification. The Lions are not new to facing teams in higher classification as they do this quite frequently to help the team play against different competition. Will Landrum was impossible to stop this game, dropping 32 points in a big time victory for the Tides.
