Brandl (pictured) isn’t so much hot as he is characteristically efficient. He just goes out and gets it done night in and night out. The Jackrabbits sit atop the 1A Div. II state rankings at the break and have lots of talent beyond the senior Brandl. But he’s the ringleader and can score in huge outbreaks when he’s not grabbing boards and dishing to his teammates. He went for 39 against Triplains/Brewster to tie the school career scoring record. Brandl entered the break with 1,687 career points.
No surprise Carlson is off to a hot start. You can pencil 20 points into the scorebook and then see how many more he gets. And he gets going when the team needs it most. He scored 44 in a tough loss to South Central and netted 36 in a tight win over Bucklin. One of the most prolific scorers in Kansas, Carlson is also one of the sneakiest athletes. The kid can leap out of the gym, which translates to track championships too.
The dynamite guard tandem the Gorillas featured last season was broken up, leaving Coup to lead as the focal point of the team. He’s responded well to the increased responsibility, averaging 21 points and 9 rebounds. He was at his best with 34 points in a tense one-point win over Minneapolis. Coup has always been a dynamite shooter who moved well without the ball. He’s now effectively running point and defending at a high level as well as hitting the glass.
Highlights
The Redskins have dropped a couple of games on the season, but they should be a team in the mix when it’s all done, due in large part to the leadership of the multi-sport star Lafferty. He’s a physical and experienced guard who can make plays at both ends. He’s averaging 22 points and a ridiculous 5 steals per game. He is efficient, hitting 64% from the field, and dropping 47% from deep.
Bryan Steadman
Bryan Steadman
A veteran guard who pushes the ball with his eyes up, Steadman is a threat to create his own shot off the bounce. He creates a lot of fast break opportunities off steals and his own rebounds. He does most of his damage on penetration and in transition. He put up 36 in a loss to Oxford and torched Argonia for 29. He’s stuffing the stat sheet with 22 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals so far this year.
