And the fans — including several former players — were quickly electric as coach Carlos Sample’s squad jumped on crosstown rival McKinley and cruised past the Panthers in dominant fashion, 75-43.
“It’s definitely a confidence-booster going into the season,” senior forward C’Zavian Teasett C’Zavian Teasett 6'3" | SG Scotlandville | 2023 State LA said. “Of course we come in with the end goal of winning the (state) championship, but these are one of the achievements that we appreciate. It means a lot. You see on the wall, they’ve got a lot of green (EBR championship) banners on the wall. We fell short last year, so we just knew we had to come in this year and get what we always have.”

The big man had been out sick for Scotlandville’s loss to Archbishop Hannan in mid-December. And the Hornets were an entirely different team with Booker in the middle on both ends of the court. He overpowered double- and triple-teams all night en route to 32 points — with frustrating efficiency from the McKinley’s perspective — and corralled five rebounds and blocked seven shots.

Booker’s return freed up Teasett from being the Hornets’ primary post presence to being able to spend even more flexibility to spend time flying around the perimeter, picking up a head of steam driving into the lane or be another solid entry-passer to Booker. He finished with 22 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and a steal.

The sophomore point guard had just torched his former team Southern Lab for 30 points in the semifinal when the Kittens left perimeter shots open in their attempts to sink the defense in around Booker. Against McKinley, he finished with seven points and seven assists, keeping the ball moving around the perimeter and finding the big man inside with well-placed entry passes.
Jace Gaines (6’1″ | 2023)
The senior guard was the biggest bright spot for the Panthers, finding open spaces in and around the lane for a team-high 13 points and snatching a steal from a Hornets team that didn’t gift many miscues.
