D10’s mid-section, their thorax if you will or if you won’t, is composed of three teams: Wayne County (6-5), Santa Fe (5-5), Culleoka (4-8). Collinwood and Hampshire are sputtering loudly, desperate to be mentioned alongside their peers.

Statistically, Cayman Camfield (Wayne County) is one of the best freshmen in the entire state. Both his points per game (14.2) and rebounds per game (5.5) climbed slightly in the last few days after his 18,16, and 10-point games mid-December. Camfield is a sturdy 200-pound freshman with a surprisingly advanced scoring package. He can shoot like a varsity veteran. He will hit shots when open, but also occasionally with a defender nearby. His reputation was unestablished, for good reason, since he was unfamiliar to opposing coaches. How do you scout for a player that did not play last season, especially within the first month+ of this new season? The short answer is…poorly.
Two freshmen play extended minutes for the Wayne County Wildcats, both Camfield and Logan Davis. Davis passed Christmas averaging an impressive 12.5 minutes per contest.
The Wildcats get even more production from its solid sophomore class. Sayler Skelton, Cooper Shamer, and Justice Bell all start each game. They all average in the 9-11 ppg range and rebound aggressively. For schools with fewer than 300 students veteran leadership is typically the only kind of backbone with any strength, any sturdiness. Wayne County holds some nice, early season wins with very little influence from the upperclassmen. This is a core of talented, driven players both young and ambitious.

Cayman Camfield “has been our secret weapon the last couple of games,” shared the Wayne County PbP announcer. “Coming off the bench. One game he had 28 and one game he had 18, so he has done good for us. And he is only a freshman.”

Santa Fe won 25 games last season! The first loss did not occur until December 11th, to eventual State Champions East Robertson and Taylor Groves. The Wildcats lost just a single district game throughout the regular season. Then, they advanced deep into the postseason, just barely losing to Jalen Anglin and West Carroll High School, 54-52.

– @PrepHoopsTN March 2022Macon’s lower-body balance was excellent in a must-win game hosting West Carroll. Adkison’s skill at such a young age was impressive. There are limitations at this early point (strength, explosion), but the offensive coherence was at an elite level for a high school freshman. Adkison got into the mid-range and pulled-up with confidence and touch. He got his shot off quickly and in still rhythm. For Adkison the next steps are going to align nicely with the typical physical maturation of the male athlete. He will need to get better “push-off” after he makes a sharp cut to create separation. This comes with stronger legs and more time in the weight room.
Much of the Santa Fe action is aimed at getting Auden Slaughter Auden Slaughter 6'2" | PG Santa Fe | 2025 State TN going “downhill”. The team likes to get him coming off of a hand-off dribble at the wing, hoping he will turn that corner and dart into the lane. Eagleville defended this action pretty well, but the team and Slaughter will find plenty of success with this scheme throughout the season.
Santa Fe’s perimeter defense against Eagleville was poor, at times worse than poor. The team will often be smaller than their opponents, which is a shortcoming that can be conquered, but it requires solid defense around the arc specifically. Denial of post-entry. Lateral mobility to discourage slashers. The team needs better attention to detail and more physical investment in the defense to stay afloat in the district. Wayne County and Richland are solid teams.
