Here are the five most important players from the contest.
Tomcats
Jaybyon Snipe
Snipe led Haywood with 22 points, and each point was important. The 6-foot-4 guard displayed his ability to make shots from the perimeter, push the basketball in transition and finish at the rim through contact. The sophomore has a nice shooting touch and is a reliable offensive threat. Snipe scored seven of his 22 points in overtime, with the final two giving the Tomcats an 82-75 cushion.
It’s going to be interesting to see how better he gets as the season moves along. But after Tuesday night, Snipe proved one thing: He’s not afraid to perform in big games.
Tylon Chatman
Chatman didn’t shoot the ball at a high clip Tuesday night, but he did trust his teammates to make shots, which is what a point guard is supposed to do. The senior point guard did a solid job of penetrating into the lane. Each time Chatman found himself in the lane, he either drew contact or found the open shooter. Chatman went 10 for 12 from the free throw line and finished the night with 21 points.
Janerius Snipe
The senior forward took advantage of the smaller defenders and scored each time he had his defender pinned deep in the paint. Snipe knows how to finish at the rim. He did a great job of that Tuesday night. Snipe had 16 points and a lot of rebounds.
Wildcats
Jairus Terry
Terry is one of the best available senior point guards left on the board in Tennessee. He set the tone early in the first quarter, by attacking the rim and knocking down shots from 17-feet out. Terry had 23 points in the loss, but he played solid on-ball defense and created turnovers when his team desperately needed them.
Damarien Yates
Like Terry, Yates had 23 points. The 6-7 senior forward was at his best Tuesday night when he was attacking the basket. Yates didn’t need to take a single jump shot since he was able to feast in the paint. Yates had the loudest highlight of the night in the fourth quarter. With his trailing 67-65 in the waning seconds of the fourth quarter, Yates drove on the baseline before lifting up for a powerful, two-handed slam that erupted the entire gym. He could have lived in the paint all night long, despite a pesky Haywood team making Yates work for each score.
